The Future of Smoking in Casinos

The Future of Smoking in Casinos

In a recent turn of events, casinos have made it clear that they have no intention of implementing nonsmoking policies any time soon. Despite efforts from shareholders and organizations like Trinity Health to advocate for a change, publicly traded casino companies such as Caesars Entertainment, Bally’s Corp., and Boyd Gaming have all voted against proposals to even consider the possibility of going smoke-free. The arguments presented by Trinity Health and the Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation regarding the risks associated with indoor smoking were dismissed by the boards of directors at these companies.

Caesars’ Stance on Nonsmoking

Caesars’ board of directors vehemently opposed the proposal to study nonsmoking policies, citing that it would not be a worthwhile allocation of company resources. The board emphasized that they take the health of their customers seriously and have measures in place to protect nonsmoking customers in designated smoking areas. The overwhelming vote of more than 81% against the proposal at Caesars’ annual meeting indicates a firm stance on maintaining the status quo of allowing smoking in their establishments.

Boyd Gaming and Bally’s Corp. followed a similar pattern in resisting the push for nonsmoking policies. With millions of votes against the proposals and only a fraction in favor, it is evident that the majority shareholders are not in favor of disrupting the current smoking regulations in casinos. Despite the small victories in reaching the 5% threshold required for a proposal to be brought back for a vote next year, the road to implementing nonsmoking policies in these venues remains long and arduous.

Implications for the Future

The prevailing attitude among major casino companies towards smoking indicates that change is unlikely to happen in the near future. While some casinos have implemented smoke-free zones and policies, the core of the gambling scene still embraces smoking as a traditional part of the experience. Casinos in Las Vegas, notorious for allowing smoking on their premises since their inception, continue to resist complete nonsmoking regulations. The exception, Park MGM, stands out as a pioneer in enforcing a comprehensive nonsmoking policy across all indoor areas.

Park MGM’s decision to ban smoking in all indoor areas sets it apart from other major casino resorts in Las Vegas. By making all rooms, suites, gaming floors, restaurants, bars, convention centers, and common areas smoke-free, Park MGM sends a clear message about prioritizing the health and well-being of its guests and employees. The promotion of a fresh and smoke-free environment demonstrates a commitment to innovation and differentiation in the competitive casino industry.

The resistance to implementing nonsmoking policies in casinos highlights a broader challenge in addressing public health concerns within the gambling industry. While some progress has been made in creating smoke-free zones and advocating for change, the status quo of allowing smoking in casinos remains deeply entrenched. As discussions continue and advocacy efforts persist, the future of smoking in casinos will continue to be a topic of debate and contention. Ultimately, the balance between tradition, customer preferences, and health considerations will shape the direction that casinos take in addressing smoking regulations.
