The previous statement indicating that such incidents occur “frequently, including at all-inclusive resorts” has been revised. The latest advisory now acknowledges that the U.S. Embassy “routinely receives reports of sexual assaults, including from U.S. citizen tourists at resorts.” This change shows a more nuanced approach to the issue.
The State Department’s latest update also includes new information related to medical preparedness for travelers to Jamaica. While the advisory recommends that U.S. citizens purchase travel insurance, including medical evacuation coverage, before visiting the country, it now also suggests that travelers pack extra prescription medication. This recommendation is based on the difficulty of obtaining common medications, such as insulin, in Jamaica. Additionally, the advisory warns that the level of healthcare available in Jamaica may not be on par with what is available in the United States.
In late January, the U.S. State Department reaffirmed its Level 3 travel warning for Jamaica, advising U.S. citizens to “reconsider travel” to the destination due to high crime rates and limited access to quality healthcare. This reissued advisory was met with strong pushback from Jamaican officials, including Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Sandals Resorts International chairman Adam Stewart. Jamaica’s U.S. ambassador, Audrey Marks, also urged U.S. officials to reconsider their assessment of the country.
