The Battle of Discount Airlines: Breeze Airways vs. Avelo Airlines in Southern Connecticut

Southern Connecticut is set to witness a fierce competition between two discount airlines, Breeze Airways and Avelo Airlines. With Breeze announcing plans to introduce 10 routes from Tweed Airport in New Haven, Conn., where Avelo currently holds its primary East Coast base, the battleground is all set for these two players to go head-to-head.

Breeze’s focus in New Haven will predominantly be on Florida destinations, with December flight launches to Fort Myers, Orlando, West Palm Beach, and Vero Beach. Additionally, February will see the introduction of flights to Jacksonville and Sarasota. Other routes from New Haven will include cities like Charleston, S.C.; Norfolk, Va.; Richmond, Va.; and Raleigh-Durham, N.C., with Breeze competing with Avelo on six out of the 10 routes.

Following Avelo’s recent announcement of service from Bradley Airport north of Hartford Conn., a Breeze base, the competition is heating up even more. Avelo will be launching its first international routes to Cancun and Montego Bay starting in November. Breeze, on the other hand, is set to grow further at Hartford, with plans for international services in the coming months.

Avelo and Breeze have unique strategies and fleet preferences. Avelo focuses on older Boeing 737NG aircraft, while Breeze is shifting towards operating new Airbus A220 small mainline jets. Both airlines emphasize leisure flying and aim to provide affordable options for travelers in the Northeast region of the U.S.

With both Breeze Airways and Avelo Airlines vying for market share in Southern Connecticut, passengers are likely to benefit from increased options and competitive pricing. It remains to be seen how these two discount carriers navigate the challenging aviation landscape and carve out their respective spaces in the market. The battle for dominance in the skies above Connecticut is just beginning, and travelers are the ones who stand to gain the most from this rivalry.
