The Craft Maltsters Guild, established in 2013 with only eight member malthouses, has experienced exponential growth over the past decade. Today, the Guild proudly boasts 110 member malthouses, predominantly located in North America, but with representation from around the globe. While the Guild acknowledges the existence of several small malthouses that have yet to join, it is evident that craft malt has evolved into a thriving industry.

According to Steve Kurowski, the executive director of the Guild, the surge of craft breweries and distilleries has been a driving force behind the ascension of craft malt. These smaller businesses, rooted in advocating for local support, often seek partnerships with local suppliers, including craft maltsters. These collaborations are founded on the principles of attentive customer service and adaptability, qualities that resonate with the ethos of craft producers.

One of the key advantages of small maltsters is their ability to source raw grains, such as barley, wheat, rye, and corn, directly from local farmers. By operating on a smaller scale, craft maltsters have the flexibility to engage with diverse crop rotations, fostering healthier soil conditions and promoting sustainability. In contrast, large malthouses rely on massive quantities of uniform grains sourced from a limited geographic region, leading to monocropping and potential soil degradation.
