When one thinks of Mallorca, an image of sun, sand, and crystal blue sea probably comes to mind. However, during a recent visit to the island, I had the opportunity to explore a lesser-known aspect of Mallorca – its mountains and rain. As I embarked on a tour bus journey through the Tramuntana mountain range towards the village of Valldemossa, I was greeted by heavy raindrops, a stark contrast to the typical sunny weather associated with the region.
Valldemossa, a historic village renowned for its Carthusian monastery dating back to the 14th century, exudes charm with its cobbled streets and stone houses. Despite its historical significance, Valldemossa remains relatively unknown to many travelers. Notable figures such as composer Frederic Chopin and novelist George Sand sought refuge in Valldemossa during the 1830s, contributing to the village’s cultural legacy. The town has also attracted modern celebrities like actor Michael Douglas, who frequents the area for its tranquil ambiance.
Upon disembarking from the bus in Valldemossa, the rain subsided, leaving behind a mist that added to the village’s enchanting atmosphere. Our tour guide encouraged us to wander aimlessly through the narrow, sloping alleyways of Valldemossa, allowing us to immerse ourselves in its historical beauty. As I meandered through the streets, I stumbled upon a quaint bakery named Pasteleria Ca’n Molinas, where I indulged in a coca de patata, a local potato pastry dusted with powdered sugar.
While enjoying the pastry, I marveled at the tranquility of Valldemossa, a stark contrast to the bustling tourist hubs found in other parts of Mallorca. The light fog that lingered in the air created a fairytale-like ambiance, transporting me to a bygone era. Despite the initial rain, the weather began to clear as we made our way back to the bus, offering a glimpse of the picturesque landscapes surrounding Valldemossa.
As we descended from Valldemossa, we noticed a line of vehicles heading towards the village, signaling its growing popularity among tourists. What was once a hidden gem tucked away in the mountains was now attracting a steady stream of visitors seeking to experience its historical and cultural richness. The idyllic charm of Valldemossa serves as a reminder of Mallorca’s diverse offerings beyond its sun-soaked beaches.
