Delta Airlines Expands International Footprint with New Routes to Copenhagen and More

Delta Airlines is set to enhance its international offerings with the launch of a new seasonal flight route connecting Minneapolis-St. Paul to Copenhagen, beginning in May. This three-times-a-week service symbolizes a significant expansion by Delta and reflects the growing demand for transatlantic travel. The introduction of this route has been strategically planned following a recent codeshare agreement with Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), indicating a collaborative effort to provide more seamless travel options for passengers.

The codeshare agreement between Delta and SAS, which came into effect in late September, represents a significant shift for both airlines. With SAS transitioning from the Star Alliance to SkyTeam, Delta’s membership in this alliance now allows it to offer travelers expanded access to over 80 destinations beyond Copenhagen through SAS’s network. This partnership not only enhances Delta’s reach but also enriches the travel experience for customers looking for multiple connection points in Europe.

Delta will proudly operate as the exclusive airline on the Minneapolis-Copenhagen route, utilizing its Airbus A330-300 aircraft. These planes are outfitted with a comprehensive range of seating options, including business class, premium economy, and economy cabins, catering to various travel preferences and budgets. By establishing its service as the only one on this route, Delta reinforces its commitment to providing travelers in the Midwest with direct access to one of Europe’s most vibrant cities.

This new route to Copenhagen is not a standalone offering; it is part of Delta’s broader strategy to expand its European destinations from Minneapolis. The city will become one of two new international routes for summer 2025, joining Rome in the airline’s growing network. Additionally, Delta already services other key European destinations from Minneapolis, including London, Dublin, Paris, and Amsterdam, as well as seasonal flights to Reykjavik. This strategic itinerary showcases Delta’s ambition to enhance travel connectivity across Europe.

Delta’s ambitious expansion goes beyond just the Minneapolis-Copenhagen route. The airline is planning the largest transatlantic schedule in its history for the summer of 2025, targeting over 700 weekly flights to 33 destinations. New routes will also launch from various hubs, including flights from Detroit to Dublin, Boston to Milan, and Atlanta to Brussels, among others. This comprehensive expansion not only underscores Delta’s commitment to increasing its international presence but also its responsiveness to market demand.

In addition to new routes in Europe, Delta is preparing to reestablish flights from Los Angeles to Shanghai, set to commence next June. This route, operated thrice weekly on state-of-the-art Airbus A350 aircraft, will place Delta in competition with carriers like China Eastern and United Airlines. By resuming this service, Delta demonstrates its intent to re-enter the Asia-Pacific market and cater to the growing demand for travel to China.

Overall, Delta Airlines’ forthcoming Minneapolis-Copenhagen route marks a significant milestone in its international expansion strategy. Through key partnerships and the introduction of new routes, Delta is enhancing its service offering and positioning itself as a leader in transatlantic travel. As the airline gears up for a record summer in 2025, its proactive approach to expanding global connectivity signals a robust future for both the airline and its passengers.
