A Hidden Gem in the Mediterranean: Discovering Sardinia

When one thinks of idyllic beaches and breathtaking landscapes, the Maldives often springs to mind, evoking images of flawless white sand and turquoise waves. Yet, a recent travel experience introduced me to a new contender—Sardinia, Italy. This Mediterranean isle boasts breathtaking coastlines and lush natural beauty, sometimes earning the moniker “the Maldives of Europe” due to its stunning beaches, which are now globally recognized. In fact, two of its beaches made the prestigious “World’s 50 Best Beaches” list for 2024, reaffirming its status as a premier destination for sun-seekers and adventure travelers alike.

Sardinia is not just a feast for the eyes; it also has a reputation for luxury that attracts the elite. The Costa Smeralda, or Emerald Coast, is home to high-end golf resorts, luxury designer boutiques, and a vibrant nightlife frequented by yachts and private jets. Notable luxury accommodations like Belmond’s revamped Romazzino Hotel at Porto Cervo and upcoming hotels from high-profile brands such as Cheval Blanc and Rocco Forte are testament to the island’s appeal to discerning travelers. However, one’s experience in Sardinia doesn’t have to break the bank.

While many travelers might shy away from a Sardinian getaway due to these luxury associations, my recent trip proved that beauty doesn’t always come at a high price. I arranged a week-long journey for around $1,500, flights included, by choosing to travel in the less popular fall season when prices are significantly lower. This time of year, with schools back in session in the UK, presented a perfect opportunity to bask in the Sardinian sun without the summer crowds. By opting for mid-range accommodations and prioritizing local dining, I managed to experience the island’s charm affordably.

I discovered the Neilson-run Baia dei Mori Beach Club, conveniently situated on the northeastern coast and a short drive from the bustling Costa Smeralda. Having previously enjoyed a stay at a Neilson property in Greece, I had high expectations, and they were met. For around 849 British pounds ($1,102) per person—sharing a room as of late September—my package included return flights, transfers, daily breakfast and lunch, several dinners, and activities like yoga, guided cycling, and tennis lessons.

From the moment I arrived, the hotel’s amenities set the stage for a mixture of relaxation and activity. I kicked off my mornings with invigorating yoga classes that overlooked the serene beach, setting a positive tone for the days ahead. Following a morning workout, rest and leisure around the picturesque pool or on the beautiful sandy beaches were always on the agenda.

One standout experience was a guided mountain biking excursion, where I chose the beginner-friendly route, enjoying an exhilarating 9 km loop that revealed Sardinia’s stunning natural beauty. Each day was a delightful blend of yoga, swimming, and exploration. Highlights included a stand-up paddleboard adventure to Budoni Bay, where I was captivated by the wild vistas of Isola Tavolara.

The culinary experiences in Sardinia were equally rewarding, with local dining options that catered to various budgets. On nights when meals weren’t included, Sinead and I ventured into nearby villages, sampling exquisite Sardinian dishes. From affordable pasta at L’Hotel Pedra Niedda to gourmet tuna steak at Ristorante La Volpe, every meal was an exploration of local flavors. Dining at family-run pizzerias allowed us to experience the island’s culinary heart without emptying our wallets.

Venturing outside the resort, we hired a car to explore the scenic wonders of the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu National Park. This road trip unveiled dramatic cliffs and secluded beaches like Cala Fuili, where the steep descents led us to hidden gems away from the tourist path.

Sardinia faces the challenge of overtourism, and I observed various measures in place to protect its pristine environment. Charming La Pelosa beach has implemented visitor limits and guidelines to mitigate environmental impact. My stay in a carefully designed resort that prioritized sustainability, complete with marked paths to preserve local flora, allowed me to enjoy the beauty of the island responsibly.

Sardinia proved to be an off-season paradise, balancing comfort, adventure, and affordability. Whether craving luxury or seeking budget-friendly options, this Mediterranean island possesses an enchanting allure that is hard to resist—truly a jewel in the crown of Europe’s holiday destinations. As I packed my bags to return home, one thing was certain: Sardinia’s captivating beauty and rich culture would beckon me back for further exploration.
