Craft beer has transformed the way individuals appreciate and experience this age-old beverage. Every year, beer enthusiasts embark on a quest for unique flavors and innovative brewing techniques, leading to memorable drinking experiences. In 2024, several exceptional beers captured my attention, inviting me to delve deeper into the artistry of brewing.
My craft beer journey commenced on a sunny day in Portland, Oregon, where I discovered ForeLand Beer, a quaint and inviting brewery. The atmosphere was lively, enhanced by the company of my friend and fellow beer writer, Jeff Alworth. Among the highlights was a collaboration between ForeLand and Kings and Daughters from Hood River, Oregon. This particular brew was served cask style, employing a hand pump that accentuates the subtle flavors and aromas of the beer. With lower carbonation and served at a higher temperature, cask beers allow drinkers to experience beer in its purest form. The whimsical charm of receiving this beer in a Christmas-themed German glass only amplified the experience.
I was captivated by the beer’s toasty malt backbone, which lingered in my thoughts long after the tasting. This experience showcased how the nuances of cask beer can completely alter one’s perception of the traditional lager and serve as a reminder that craft breweries often innovate within their local communities.
Next up was Counter Weight Brewing in my home state of Connecticut, acclaimed for its exceptional lagers. The frosty January day prompted me to seek out their rauchbock, a robust smoked lager that has origins in Bamberg, Germany. The friendly staff tirelessly advocated that I try this unique offering, and I was grateful I did. The rauchbock delivered a rich and complex flavor profile, with smoky undertones complimented by a delightful alcohol warmth. With an ABV of 6.2%, it was a perfect fit for the winter chill outside, reinforcing the notion that regional breweries perfectly harness local flavors and influences.
A Sour Sensation from Vermont
In contrast, my next standout was a mixed fermentation sour from Hill Farmstead Brewery in Greensboro Bend, Vermont, a spot consistently ranked among the world’s elite breweries. After witnessing the breathtaking sight of a total solar eclipse, I indulged in a 2% ABV plum-infused sour that struck a harmonious balance between fruity and tart. The incorporation of pomace ensured a deep purple hue while intensifying the plum notes across my palate. This low-alcohol beer was refreshing, celebrating the natural flavor of its ingredients and emphasizing how a drink can invoke profound connections to moments in time.
Charming Brews from Utah
While visiting my sister in Utah, I stumbled upon Offset Bier Co., a small but inviting brewery nestled near Park City. Their DOPO IPA, a refreshing blend of Mosaic, Nelson Sauvin, and Simcoe hops with a moderate 5% ABV, was perfectly suited for the outdoors. This beer’s delightful fruity profile and approachable nature made it an instant favorite, further recognized by Craft Beer and Brewing magazine as one of the best brews of the year. Each sip echoed the brewery’s dedication to crafting enjoyable beers that resonate with both casual drinkers and seasoned aficionados alike.
A Taste of the Ohio Scene
Traveling to Cleveland led me to Masthead Brewing, where I ordered their hazy IPA at a local dive bar, Knockback Nat’s, right after a Reds game. Growing up in New England, where the hazy IPA originated, set a high standard for my expectations. However, Masthead’s version was a seamless blend of juicy orange notes and a silky mouthfeel, compelling me to quickly order a second round. This experience encapsulated how regional breweries successfully manage to infuse their own interpretations and creativity into classic styles.
Later, a journey through the picturesque Yorkshire Dales introduced me to the beloved Old Peculier at the Green Dragon pub in Hadrow. With a history dating back to the early 1800s, this 5.6% ABV beer captured the essence of traditional British brewing. Sipping this deep, cherry-flavored brew while enjoying the serene surroundings made for an unforgettable experience, blending culture, history, and flavor in harmony.
In October, I wandered the vibrant streets of Merida, Mexico, where I encountered a small taproom offering local brews. One particular West Coast IPA from Cerveza Fervor caught my attention. Known for their expertise in preserving hop freshness in warmer climates, I was surprised to discover this gem with a 5.6% ABV that redefined my expectations for IPAs in hot weather. Its refreshing hop character inspired a longing for more, leading me to return multiple times throughout my week in Merida.
Reflecting on the beers I enjoyed throughout 2024, I’m reminded of how craft beer has the power to unite people across cultures and experiences. Each of these exceptional brews not only highlights the ingenuity of their respective breweries but also emphasizes the joy of exploration and appreciation for the craftsmanship behind every pint. Cheers to another year of exciting discoveries in the world of craft beer!
