Bears of Neet’s Bay: A Journey into Alaska’s Wild

When one thinks of Alaska, images of vast landscapes teeming with wildlife, towering glaciers, and awe-inspiring natural wonders come to mind. While glaciers and whales capture the attention of many visitors, it is the elusive bear that often remains a mystery to most nature enthusiasts. Recently, I embarked on an excursion from Ketchikan that promised to offer a thrilling encounter with these majestic creatures. My adventure took us to Neet’s Bay, where the confluence of a whitewater stream and the ocean creates a prime feeding ground for black bears.

After disembarking from the Regent’s Seven Seas Explorer at the Ward’s Cove cruise pier, the anticipation bubbled within me as I boarded a bus filled with eager travelers. The short bus ride culminated at a dock, where we boarded a sleek jet boat operated by Adventure Ketchikan Tours. The promise of a bear sighting infused the air with excitement as we sped through the waters for an hour, journeying into the heart of the Alaskan wilderness.

Our guide, brimming with knowledge, shared captivating insights into the region’s ecology, emphasizing the significance of salmon in the bears’ diet. This context heightened our appreciation for the excursion, transforming it from merely a bear-watching jaunt into a profound learning experience. We even caught a glimpse of an obscure U.S. Navy facility situated in the Behm Canal. It served as a reminder of Alaska’s dual identity as a natural paradise and a strategically significant location.

As the jet boat docked at Neet’s Bay, we disembarked with eager anticipation. The muddy path leading us along the shoreline offered glimpses of the wild. It wasn’t long before our guide pointed out the telltale gash marks on trees that signified bear activity and underground dens where they sought refuge from the elements.

My expectations for bear sightings fluctuated between optimism and skepticism. However, as we approached the stream, I was met with the exhilarating sight of a pair of substantial black bears, each weighing around 350 pounds. They were engrossed in their hunt, scanning the rushing water for salmon attempting to navigate upstream to spawn. We maintained a respectful distance, separated by a rope line between viewing platforms, ensuring both our safety and the bears’ comfort during their mealtime ritual.

The thrill of witnessing black bears feed was thrilling, though the reality of our experience was more subdued than the adventure imagery often depicted in popular media. Over the course of the hour, we managed to see just four bears. Yet, the memories of a previous fruitless bear-watching attempt hung over my expectations: standing in the cold for what felt like an eternity only to leave empty-handed.

Suddenly, the challenge of the hunt transformed as one of the bears made a successful catch. Gripping it firmly in its jaws, it retreated to a nearby rock to devour its prize. It was fascinating to observe the bear’s meticulous selection process; they often prefer the females laden with roe, a strategic decision that ensures optimal energy gain in preparation for winter hibernation.

The Neet’s Bay Hatchery plays a crucial role in the survival of the salmon population, nurturing young fish to maturity before releasing them into the wild. Workers at the facility employ careful techniques to ensure that more fry survive to adulthood, bolstering the salmon population that bears rely on for sustenance.

As our jet boat retraced its route back to Ketchikan, we kept our eyes peeled for the whales that were rumored to grace these waters. Unfortunately, they remained hidden from view, but our spirits were buoyed by our experience with the bears. Along the way, we spotted a group of Steller sea lions, each weighing up to 1,500 pounds, playfully asserting dominance over the rocky outcroppings.

The excursion to Neet’s Bay had fulfilled its promise of offering a glimpse into the lives of black bears in their natural habitat. For many, like myself, the experience transcended mere observation. It was a powerful reminder of the delicate balance between wildlife and their environment. As our boat approached Ketchikan, a sense of fulfillment washed over me. I eagerly looked forward to shedding the damp clothes and savoring a hot beverage, my heart still racing from the morning’s thrilling encounter with Alaska’s wilderness.
