Beci Mahnken, the driving force behind MEI-Travel, Mouse Fan Travel, and Universal Fan Travel, has noted an enthusiastic response from clients, spurred on by a national advertising campaign. She describes the current interest as “soaring,” with a significant spike in sales correlating with the impending opening of Epic Universe. Similarly, co-owners Greg and Elyssa Antonelle of Let’s Adventure Travel have also observed a dramatic rise in sales and inquiries, reinforcing the notion that travelers eager for new experiences are ready to commit to Universal’s latest venture.

However, despite the positive outlook, not all travel agents report the same level of enthusiasm pertaining to sales growth. Kari Dillon, CEO and founder of Marvelous Mouse Travels, reported only a modest increase of around 10%. This was lower than anticipated, hinting at potential anxieties among visitors regarding ticket options and availability. It seems that the initial enthusiasm has not yet translated fully into bookings, as many potential guests prefer to remain cautious, awaiting further details on ticketing arrangements.

Universal has implemented a staggered ticket release strategy to manage crowd levels upon Epic Universe’s opening. The first wave launched in October, offering multiday tickets with limited access, including single-day tickets for annual pass holders. While the travel advisory community largely supports this approach for its potential to prevent overwhelming crowds—an issue that haunted past openings—frustrations have risen among clients.

Dillon specifically noted that many guests are dissatisfied with the limited ticketing options currently available, expressing a desire for greater flexibility and the assurance of ample access to the park’s attractions. This hesitance is compounded by uncertainty and skepticism toward future ticket releases. It appears that the travel community is caught in a balancing act between managing bookings now and waiting for more palatable options that meet clients’ desires for extended park experiences.

Travel agents recall the chaos associated with past theme park launches, like the overwhelming crowds during the openings of Islands of Adventure in 1999 and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in 2010. “It’s an intelligent approach to managing demand,” said Mahnken, though there remains a concern that delays in expanded ticket options could frustrate eager guests. Nonetheless, there is optimism that the planned releases will enhance overall guest experiences once the park opens.

Epic Universe is crafted with diversity in mind, featuring five themed lands including Celestial Park, Super Nintendo World, Dark Universe, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, and How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk. The variety caters not only to families but also to adult fans, creating a sense of inclusivity among options. Antonelle noted that Dark Universe has garnered particular interest among adults, reminiscent of Universal’s successful Halloween Horror Nights, while children are drawn to the interactive elements of Super Nintendo World.

The level of interactivity in certain attractions has heightened expectations among the younger audience. Super Nintendo World, which has already made waves at Universal Studios in Hollywood and Japan, promises to incorporate exciting gameplay elements where guests can use a Power-Up Band to engage with the environment. The anticipation surrounding Isle of Berk could surge with the release of the live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon,” coinciding with Epic’s opening.

Interest is also palpable around the Ministry of Magic, which aims to bring the beloved Harry Potter universe alive, igniting a frenzy among fans eager to experience immersive storytelling through the attraction, “Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry.” The melding of an iconic franchise with state-of-the-art technology positions Epic Universe as a potential frontrunner in theme park innovation.

As the countdown narrows towards the grand opening of Epic Universe, the excitement envelops both travel advisors and prospective guests. Universal Orlando’s thoughtful approach to ticketing stability reflects an understanding of their audience, as they navigate the complexities of drawing crowds while managing experiences.
