The Rise of Third Kingdom: A Mushroom-Focused Dining Experience

As we step into 2024, the culinary world is embracing a new obsession – mushrooms. Third Kingdom, a restaurant venture in New York City, is taking this obsession to the next level by dedicating its entire menu to mycelium-based dishes. Spearheading this innovative concept is Ravi DeRossi, the visionary behind Overthrow Hospitality. Known for pushing boundaries, DeRossi aims to offer elevated plant-based cuisine in an inclusive environment, appealing to both vegans and non-vegans alike.

Chef Juan Pajarito, from Overthrow Hospitality’s nearby Avant Garden, collaborates with Third Kingdom to craft an extraordinary menu that showcases the versatility and distinct flavors of mushrooms. From the earthy chanterelle to the delicate oyster, and the meaty lion’s mane to the aromatic shitake, each dish prominently features various mushroom varieties. The menu boasts tantalizing creations such as Lion’s Mane dumplings with daikon sauce and micro cilantro, black pearl oyster mole enchiladas with epazote sour cream, and beech mushrooms with cauliflower cream, nori butter, herb breadcrumbs, and parmesan. Additionally, a weekly rotating “Forager’s Corner” highlights Yellow Foot Chanterelle and Hedgehog mushrooms, offering diners a chance to indulge in the richness of nature’s bounty.

In line with the growing popularity of mushrooms, Third Kingdom meticulously curates its ambiance to create a moody and gothic atmosphere. Upon entering, guests are enveloped by deep burgundy walls, adorned with whimsical mushroom art framed in gilded frames. The 50-seat eatery features handmade Spalted Maple wood tables, showcasing natural variegation hues and lines resulting from fungus decay. Black banquette seating adds a touch of elegance, inviting patrons to immerse themselves in this enchanting dining experience.

To complement the mushroom-centric menu, Third Kingdom offers a rotating selection of beers and an expansive wine list curated by Overthrow Hospitality partner, Drew Brady. Brady recognizes that the diverse flavors of mushrooms provide an ideal canvas for wine pairing experimentation. Guests can anticipate exceptional tasting experiences, as the subtle nuances and complexities of the wines harmonize with the umami profiles of the mushrooms.

Chef Pajarito expresses his honor and excitement to be part of this incredible team, remarking on the opportunity to create unique and exciting cuisine. Third Kingdom’s commitment to offering elevated plant-based dishes aligns with Chef Pajarito’s culinary philosophy, allowing him to explore the limitless possibilities of mushrooms and crafting extraordinary culinary experiences for patrons.

Situated at 21 East 7th Street, Third Kingdom opens its doors from Tuesday to Sunday, inviting diners to embark on a journey through the captivating realm of mushrooms. From 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., guests can savor the delectable mushroom-centered creations that redefine the boundaries of plant-based cuisine.
