CBP to Standardize Trusted-Traveler Program Fees

CBP to Standardize Trusted-Traveler Program Fees

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently announced that they will be standardizing the application fees for the Global Entry, Nexus, and Sentri trusted-traveler programs starting October 1st. This change will increase the application fee for all three programs to $120, aligning the fees across the board. Previously, the fees were $100 for Global Entry, $50 for Nexus, and $122.25 for Sentri. The adjustment in fees will help the agency cover application-processing costs, ensuring the sustainability of these programs.

CBP emphasized the need to update the fee structures for these programs, as they have not been modified in 15 years. The evolution and expansion of the programs over the years necessitated a reevaluation of the fees to support their continued operation. Global Entry provides expedited clearance for air travelers entering the U.S., while Nexus offers the same for individuals entering from Canada by land, sea, or air. Sentri facilitates expedited entry for passengers coming in from Mexico via roads and air. Membership in these programs lasts for five years, during which members undergo periodic background checks and in-person interviews.

As part of the fee restructuring, minors whose parents or legal guardians are already enrolled in any of the programs, or are enrolling at the same time, will be able to apply for free. This is a significant change, as previously minors were required to pay the full application fee for Global Entry, while they could enroll for free in the Nexus program. Additionally, Sentri offers various family plans to accommodate multiple members applying together, making the process more accessible for families.

The updates in application fees for the trusted-traveler programs are crucial to ensure the sustainability and efficiency of these programs. With the increase in fees, CBP will be able to adequately cover the costs associated with processing applications, conducting background checks, and maintaining the overall operations of these programs. By standardizing the fees and offering exemptions for minors under certain circumstances, CBP aims to streamline the application process and make it more inclusive for families looking to enroll in these programs.

Overall, the fee harmonization for the Global Entry, Nexus, and Sentri trusted-traveler programs represents a necessary step towards modernizing and enhancing the efficiency of these programs. As travel continues to evolve and security measures become increasingly important, it is essential for CBP to adapt and adjust the fees to meet the growing demands of these programs.
