The landscape of the world’s busiest airports experienced a significant shakeup in 2023, reflecting the resurgence of international travel. According to Airports Council International’s latest rankings, Dubai International Airport soared to the second spot, a massive leap from fifth place in 2022 and fourth place in 2019. Similarly, Tokyo Haneda International Airport witnessed a remarkable 55% increase in passenger traffic, propelling it to fifth place from the 16th place in the previous year. This global ranking shuffle underscores the massive rebound in international travel post-pandemic.
The global airports collectively welcomed 8.5 billion passengers in the past year, marking a 27% surge from 2022. Despite this impressive recovery, the passenger count still lags approximately 6% behind pre-pandemic levels. This resurgence has particularly benefited airlines with extensive international networks, revitalizing their operations. However, domestic-focused U.S. airlines, predominantly catering to the ultra-low-cost segment, faced challenges amid the international travel rejuvenation.
While domestic U.S. airports continued to witness a surge in passenger numbers, some experienced fluctuations in their rankings due to the evolving travel landscape. Denver International Airport, a key United Airlines hub, accommodated nearly 78 million passengers in the past year, marking a 12% increase from 2022. However, the airport slipped from third to sixth place in the ACI rankings. Conversely, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, serving as Delta Air Lines’ primary hub, retained its top position by handling an impressive 104.7 million passengers.
The latest rankings released by ACI unveiled a significant reshuffle in the global airport hierarchy, showcasing the changing preferences of travelers and the revival of long-haul journeys. The top ten busiest airports in 2023 were as follows:
