In a controversial move, the Board of Commissioners for the Port of Oakland has voted in favor of renaming Oakland International Airport to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport. The decision, made unanimously, has sparked outrage in the nearby city of San Francisco. Despite threats of a lawsuit over a supposed trademark violation, the Port Commission is moving forward with the name change and has scheduled a final vote for May 9. The rationale behind the name change is to attract travelers who might mistakenly fly into San Francisco’s airport, even when their destination is closer to Oakland.
During the voting process, the commissioners listened to a variety of public comments from different stakeholders. Residents of Oakland and airline representatives showed strong support for the name change, citing the benefits it would bring to the city and the region. On the other hand, representatives from San Francisco tourism and hospitality interests expressed strong opposition, claiming that the proposed name change would confuse travelers. Some supporters of the change even suggested placing “Oakland” ahead of “San Francisco” in the new name to alleviate concerns about confusion.

Simon mentioned that Oakland International had lost a significant number of new routes in recent years due to a lack of geographic awareness. The airport’s official name, Metropolitan Oakland International Airport, has struggled to attract airlines and sustain new routes.
