The Majestic Refurbishment of the British Colonial Hotel in Nassau

The recently renovated British Colonial Hotel in downtown Nassau holds a rich history dating back to 1901 when it was originally built by railroad and oil tycoon Henry Flagler. Over the years, the hotel has undergone various transformations and most recently was operated under the Hilton brand before closing its doors in early 2022 for a $50 million rejuvenation. The focus of the refurbishment was to attract more leisure guests by adding new amenities such as a second pool, updated pool deck, and a variety of new restaurant concepts.

Luxurious Accommodations

The British Colonial Hotel boasts 288 rooms spread across seven stories, with each room offering mesmerizing views of either the water and garden or the vibrant city. Among these are 25 signature suites, including the lavish Prime Minister Suite, all of which have been upgraded with modern fixtures to ensure a comfortable stay for guests. I had the pleasure of staying in a one-bedroom signature suite during my visit, which provided a peaceful retreat equipped with all the essentials I needed for my three-day stay.

One of the highlights of my experience at the British Colonial Hotel was the culinary journey offered at its seven food and beverage outlets. From the fine-dining experience at Mahogany Club to the authentic flavors of Sakana Noodle and Sushi Bar, there is a culinary delight for every palate. I had the pleasure of indulging in a sumptuous surf-and-turf meal at Mahogany Club, followed by a meticulously crafted tiramisu at the Woodes Rogers Tavern Grill martini bar, where live jazz music added to the ambiance reminiscent of the 1920s speakeasy.

The refurbishment of the British Colonial Hotel not only breathed new life into the property but also paid homage to its illustrious past. The hotel’s elegant lobby staircase, a popular spot for photographs, sets the tone for the classic colonial and Caribbean fusion that defines the property. A mural showcasing the hotel’s history from 1901 and Bahamian heritage, including its ties to the James Bond film series, serves as a vivid reminder of the hotel’s storied past. Additionally, the lush grounds surrounding the hotel, the freshwater oceanfront pools, and the pristine white-sand beach offer guests a tranquil retreat just steps away from the bustling city center.

Convenient Location

Situated on Bay Street, Nassau’s main thoroughfare, the British Colonial Hotel provides easy access to some of the city’s most popular attractions. A leisurely 10-minute walk will lead you to the famous Straw Market, the interactive Pirates of Nassau exhibit, and the historic Queen’s Staircase. For guests looking to explore further, the hotel’s proximity to the Nassau Cruise Port allows for convenient access to various day trips and excursions.

The revitalization of the British Colonial Hotel in Nassau has elevated the guest experience to new heights while preserving the hotel’s historic charm. Whether you’re seeking a luxurious escape, a culinary adventure, or a cultural immersion, the British Colonial Hotel offers a harmonious blend of past and present for a memorable stay in the heart of Nassau.
