The 2024 Smart City Index released by the IMD World Competitiveness Center’s Smart City Observatory in collaboration with the World Smart Sustainable Cities Organization (WeGO) has revealed some interesting trends. According to the report, of the top 10 smart cities on the list, seven were located in Europe. This indicates a shift in global smart city rankings, with North American cities falling down the ranks. The study ranks 142 smart cities worldwide based on data analyzed by researchers and survey responses of 120 residents in each city.
The IMD defines a smart city as “an urban setting that applies technology to enhance the benefits and diminish the shortcomings of urbanization for its citizens.” This definition goes beyond just the use of technology and looks at how it impacts the quality of life of the city’s inhabitants. Smart cities are places where infrastructure and technology work together to create a better living environment for residents.
Cities that perform well on the smart city index have developed initiatives that cater to their citizens’ overall quality of life. These initiatives include developing green spaces, promoting cultural events, and fostering social bonding. In addition, leading cities have adopted innovative strategies to attract and retain talent, promote sustainability, and address issues of geographical inequalities and inclusion.
The top 10 smart cities in the world, according to the 2024 Smart City Index, are Zurich, Switzerland; Oslo, Norway; Canberra, Australia; Geneva, Switzerland; Singapore; Copenhagen, Denmark; Lausanne, Switzerland; London, England; Helsinki, Finland; and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Notably, this year marks the first absence of North American cities in the top 20 rankings.
While European cities dominated the top spots on the list, Asian cities are also making significant progress. The top 5 smart cities in Asia are Singapore (5th), Beijing (13th), Taipei City (16th), Seoul (17th), and Shanghai (19th). Singapore, in particular, has consistently ranked among the top 10 positions since the inception of the index in 2019, showcasing its commitment to innovation and sustainability.
As cities navigate a future filled with uncertainties, they must design and adopt strategies that can withstand various challenges, including health-related concerns, climate change, and international tensions. Bruno Lanvin, president of the Smart City Observatory, points out that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can play a crucial role in creating more human-centric cities, addressing the needs and aspirations of residents in a rapidly changing world.

By focusing on quality of life, inclusivity, and resilience, cities can create a better future for their inhabitants and lead the way in the global smart city movement.
