Air Canada has recently revealed its plans to integrate NDC content within Sabre in the upcoming weeks. This move comes as part of the airline’s larger strategy to shift towards digital modern merchandising technology. The airline’s NDC strategy includes offering incentive payments for NDC bookings while implementing surcharges on legacy GDS bookings. This strategy has proven successful, with over 600 agencies now booking Air Canada flights via this innovative technology.
Changes in Fare Surcharge
One significant change that Air Canada is making is the elimination of surcharges on legacy GDS bookings for most fare buckets. Previously, a surcharge of $21.50 for Amadeus and Travelport and $24.50 for Sabre bookings applied to all fare classes. However, moving forward, this surcharge will only be applicable to the G, K, A, and P fare buckets.
While Amadeus currently remains the primary GDS through which travel agencies can book NDC-enabled Air Canada tickets, the airline is working towards expanding access. An NDC agreement was reached with Travelport last October, although the integration is still in progress. Travel advisors can also access Air Canada’s NDC content through direct connects, specialized NDC aggregators, and the Air Canada Connex desktop system.
Air Canada is not only focusing on expanding NDC access but also on improving the overall user experience. In the next year, the airline plans to introduce several servicing improvements to its NDC platform. These enhancements will include support for disrupted customers, new features for handling involuntary changes, the ability to apply unused tickets for future travel, and more payment options for international markets.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, Air Canada is set to double its risk-free refund period to 48 hours for NDC bookings in the coming months. Additionally, the airline will introduce dynamic fares later this year. Dynamic fares offer continuously generated price points that are not available through traditional GDS technology. This move aims to provide customers with more pricing options and flexibility when booking flights with Air Canada.
Air Canada’s integration of NDC content within Sabre and the changes in fare surcharges reflect the airline’s commitment to enhancing the booking experience for travelers and travel agencies alike. By leveraging innovative technology and making strategic adjustments to its pricing structure, Air Canada is positioning itself for continued growth and success in the competitive airline industry.
