Airline Baggage Handling Improvements in 2023

In 2023, airlines demonstrated a significant improvement in their baggage handling processes, as reported by aviation technology company SITA. The mishandled-bag rate was down to 6.9 bags per 1,000, a decrease of 9.2% from the previous year’s rate of 7.6 per 1,000. This improvement is particularly impressive considering that there was a 30% increase in passenger traffic during the same period.

Regional Disparities

Among U.S. airlines, the mishandled-bag rate was even lower at 5.77 per 1,000. However, the disparity between mishandled baggage on international routes versus domestic routes was quite significant. International itineraries had a mishandled-bag rate of 12.1 per thousand compared to only 2.4 per thousand for domestic flights. This indicates that there is still room for improvement, especially on international flights.

Overall, airlines mishandled 36.1 million bags in 2023, according to SITA. This data was obtained using a combination of IATA passenger traffic data and SITA’s WorldTracer automated tracking solution. It is concerning to note that 82% of mishandled bags resulted in baggage delays, while the remaining cases were split between damaged or pilfered bags and lost or stolen bags.

Among the bags that experienced delays, transfer mishandling accounted for the majority at 46%. This highlights the importance of streamlining the transfer process to reduce the likelihood of baggage delays. Additionally, measures need to be implemented to address issues related to damaged or stolen bags to further enhance overall baggage handling efficiency.

While the overall improvement in airline baggage handling in 2023 is commendable, there are still areas that require attention and enhancement.
