Iceland’s iconic Blue Lagoon is not only known for its stunning geothermal spa but also for its unique hospitality offerings. The company has recently announced plans to open a second Retreat-branded hotel in the highlands of Iceland by 2027. This new hotel will be situated in a mountainous location near the existing Highland Base at Kerlingafjöll resort, which opened its doors last July. The Highland Base concept includes a range of accommodations, from lodges and hostels to huts and campsites, all designed to cater to adventure-seeking guests.
The new Retreat hotel will be located in a remote part of Iceland, offering guests a truly immersive and off-the-grid experience. The journey to the Highland Base from Reykjavik takes approximately three and a half hours by car or bus, traversing unpaved roads through the breathtaking Icelandic landscape. This remote location adds to the allure of the Blue Lagoon’s hospitality offerings, providing guests with a sense of seclusion and tranquility amidst nature’s beauty.
In addition to the new hotel announcement, Blue Lagoon is also focusing on enhancing its flagship geothermal spa and existing hospitality venues. The Silica Hotel, with its 35 rooms, is set to undergo a refresh by the end of this year. Updates planned for late 2024 include improved changing facilities, the introduction of gender-inclusive locker rooms, and new water experiences like a cold plunge and updated sauna. The installation of a “steam cave” and two new massage waterfalls will further enhance the guest experience at the spa.
As Blue Lagoon expands its hospitality offerings, the company remains committed to sustainable practices and environmental preservation. The upcoming upgrades to the welcome house and site protection measures, including barriers to shield against potential lava flows, demonstrate the company’s dedication to safeguarding Iceland’s natural beauty. The new welcome house, set to open by the end of next year, will not only serve as an entry point for guests but also seamlessly integrate with the surrounding landscape.
Blue Lagoon’s expansion into the Icelandic highlands with a new Retreat hotel signifies the company’s commitment to providing unique and immersive experiences for guests. With a focus on adventure, relaxation, and environmental sustainability, the Blue Lagoon continues to set itself apart as a premier destination in Iceland’s hospitality industry.
