The Sun Princess, despite its name, did not have the best weather to showcase its features. Cold rain fell from the grey clouds, creating a less than ideal atmosphere for exploring a new cruise ship. The ship’s curves were not bathed in warm sunlight as one might expect, but rather drenched in raindrops, obscuring the new ship’s beauty.
Embarking on the Sun Princess for its second revenue cruise through the Med provided a unique opportunity to experience the first of the line’s Sphere class ships. This particular ship had been seven years in the making, showcasing its distinctive curved design. The large windows formed a bulbous sphere in the center of the ship, catching the eye upon embarkation. Additionally, the front of the ship boasted a geodesic structure known as The Dome, offering a unique and captivating space for passengers.
Stepping into The Dome felt like seeking refuge from the rain, with plush chaise lounge chairs arranged in an amphitheater-like setup overlooking an inside/outside pool. The pool area transitioned into a stage for acrobatic performances by Cirque Eloize, adding a touch of entertainment to the space. Adjacent to The Dome were hot tubs, the Sea View outdoor bar, and expansive views of the surrounding ocean.
The ship’s design focused on bringing more natural light inside, beyond just The Dome. From the salon with ocean views for beauty treatments to the yoga and Pilates room with ample sunlight, the Sun Princess aimed to keep guests connected to the sea. Even the elevators at the aft of the ship provided stunning views from Deck 7 to Deck 18, enhancing the overall cruise experience.
A highlight of the ship was the Cabana Mini Suite, a new cabin category that redefined the traditional balcony concept. Instead of a regular balcony, guests were treated to an enclosed cabana-style room with a couch and television. Beyond this room was a patio overlooking a restricted-access sundeck, offering a unique space for socializing and soaking up the sun. While innovative, the lack of privacy in the cabana-style room may deter some guests seeking seclusion.
As the cruise continued and the weather hopefully improved, the Sun Princess promised to reveal itself in different lights. With its unique design features, attention to natural light, and innovative cabin offerings, the ship presented a memorable and distinctive cruising experience for passengers. Despite the rainy start, there was much to look forward to aboard the Sun Princess.
The Sun Princess offered a unique cruising experience that blended innovative design elements with a focus on natural light and guest comfort. From The Dome’s captivating space to the Cabana Mini Suite’s modern twist on balcony cabins, the ship aimed to provide a memorable journey through the Mediterranean. With the promise of changing weather and new experiences ahead, the Sun Princess had the potential to shine brightly, even on the grayest of days.
