Disney Cruise Line’s development of Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on the southern tip of Eleuthera required a significant amount of effort to protect the local wildlife and habitat. The relocation of coral, human-sized sponges, tracking birds’ behaviors, and identifying the hiding spots of crabs on land were just some of the challenges faced. By teaming up with biologists and establishing a conservation management team, the cruise line aimed to minimize the impact on wildlife in the area.
To ensure minimal disruption to the natural environment, Disney Cruise Line made careful decisions throughout the development process. Lookout Cay would only occupy less than 16% of the 900 acres purchased on Eleuthera, leaving the majority of the land in its natural state. The construction of a trestle pier, designed to act as a bridge above marine communities, avoided the need for dredging and prevented damage to sensitive coral reefs.
The conservation team faced the challenge of relocating 800 pieces of coral and several barrel sponges to new habitats where they could thrive. The innovative approach of creating a vertical tulle shoe rack with compartments allowed for the safe transportation of barrel sponges, showcasing the cruise line’s commitment to conservation efforts. Additionally, limestone rocks strategically placed near the pier provided a new habitat for fish in the area.
In order to monitor the impact of Lookout Cay on wildlife, Disney Cruise Line enlisted biologists to observe and track the behavior of birds and other animals in the area. By tagging birds with detection devices and placing similar tags on crabs, the team could gather valuable information on how wildlife was responding to the new development. This data would help them make informed decisions to avoid disruptions to the local ecosystem.
Disney Cruise Line’s conservation efforts also included educational initiatives for guests visiting Lookout Cay. By creating nature trails with informative signage about the local wildlife, such as curly-tailed lizards and conchs, the cruise line aimed to provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the natural history of the area. Additionally, partnerships with organizations like NatGeo Kids allowed for interactive learning experiences for children at Sebastian’s Cove.
