The transition from a glamorous rock star lifestyle to managing figureheads like Buzz Aldrin is not a common career trajectory. However, for Christina Korp from Florida, this was the unexpected turn her life took. Previously known as Christina Rasch, a singer-songwriter who toured with the likes of Ringo Starr, Korp exited the music scene to manage media celebrities like John Tesh. Little did she know that she would soon be managing Buzz Aldrin, the iconic astronaut known for being the second man to walk on the moon.
When Korp started working with Aldrin in 2008, she admitted to knowing nothing about space. She initially perceived Aldrin as a quiet old man who had achieved a remarkable feat by walking on the moon. However, working closely with him for 10 years, Korp learned an invaluable lesson – there’s always another way, and one should never take no for an answer. Aldrin’s persistence and ability to find alternative solutions were eye-opening for Korp and taught her the importance of perseverance in the face of challenges.
Inspired by her work with Aldrin, Korp founded Purpose Entertainment to promote space exploration and highlight the contributions of women in space. Through her collaboration with veteran astronaut Nicole Stott, known as the “artistic astronaut,” Korp sought to recognize the achievements of women often overlooked in the space industry. Together, they established the Space for a Better World foundation, organizing space camps at Como Hotels and Resorts to educate children and adults about space exploration.
Bringing Space Education to Como Hotels and Resorts
Doris Goh, chief commercial officer of Como, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for collaborating with Christina Korp to introduce space camps as part of their guest experiences. By integrating the theme of space into their resorts, Como aims to inspire both children and adults to engage in activities that foster curiosity and learning. Korp emphasized the importance of highlighting the link between space technology and sustainability, showcasing how advancements in space tech benefit life on Earth.
Connecting Space Curious with Space Serious
The primary goal of the space camps organized by Korp and Stott is to bridge the gap between those curious about space and those dedicated to space exploration. By demonstrating how space technology impacts daily life on Earth, such as in GPS systems and energy sources, they aim to raise awareness about the relevance of space science in addressing global challenges like climate change and environmental conservation.
Advocating for Sustainable Space Tourism
Korp expressed her support for advancements in space tourism that offer unique perspectives on Earth. While she acknowledges the allure of spaceflight experiences, she emphasizes the need for these activities to contribute meaningfully to the understanding of space and the planet. Instead of focusing solely on joyrides for the wealthy, Korp applauds initiatives like Space Perspective’s balloon flights, which provide a longer and more immersive view of Earth.
Empowering Space Explorers for a Better World
As an advocate for space exploration and sustainability, Korp envisions a future where space travelers can leverage their experiences to benefit Earth. Through Purpose Entertainment’s private zero-gravity rides and collaborations with astronauts like Nicole Stott and Charlie Duke, Korp aims to foster a community of space explorers committed to making a positive impact on our planet. By combining her passion for space with a dedication to fostering environmental stewardship, Korp continues to inspire others to look beyond the stars and towards a brighter future for humanity.
