The annual Sweets & Snacks Expo recently took place in Indianapolis, showcasing a wide array of chocolate, candy, and snack products. What was particularly notable about this year’s expo was the trend towards mini or bite-sized versions of products. However, this downsizing was not driven by “shrinkflation,” but rather by a commitment to reducing calorie counts by the confectionery industry.
The Shift towards Healthier Options
The confectionery industry’s Always A Treat Initiative, a 5-year pledge made in collaboration with the Partnership for a Healthier America, aims to have at least half of instant consumable items sold in 200 calorie or less packages. This commitment to downsizing not only benefits public health but also reflects consumer preferences. The recent Power of Portions Report revealed that half of candy consumers are actively cutting back on portions, opting for single-serve snacks and predetermined portion sizes to control their intake.
Diversity in Product Offerings
Alongside the mini and bite-sized trend, the expo also featured a range of “better-for-you” candies and snacks. These products, which include lower sugar content and more plant-based protein, align with evolving consumer desires for healthier options. John Downs, President & CEO of the National Confectioners Association, emphasized the emotional well-being that chocolate and candy bring to consumers, especially during celebratory occasions and holidays.
Several innovative products were on display at the expo, offering healthier alternatives to traditional treats. Items such as Ghirardelli Chocolate Mini Squares, Klondike Cones Chocolate Bites, and Little Debbie Mini Muffins cater to consumers looking for portion-controlled indulgences. These products not only meet consumer demands but also reflect the industry’s commitment to responsible consumption.
In response to the growing trend of sugar reduction, many exhibitors showcased lower-sugar versions of their products. From Jif To Go Peanut Butter & Chocolate Flavored Spread to Sconza Thins and Vortman Zero Sugar Chocolate Chip Cookies, there is a noticeable shift towards products with reduced sugar content. These offerings provide consumers with choices that align with their dietary preferences.
Another prevalent trend at the expo was the focus on products with higher protein and plant-based ingredients. With “high-protein” being the top-ranked eating pattern according to the IFIC 2023 Food & Health Survey, brands like Nutri-Grain, Lindt, Lenny and Larry’s, and Katjes are catering to consumer preferences for protein-packed and plant-based snacks. These products not only offer nutritional benefits but also appeal to a growing segment of health-conscious consumers.
While taste remains a significant factor in consumer choices, the confectionery industry’s Always A Treat Initiative serves as a guide for promoting responsible consumption through smaller portions. The prevalence of miniature treats at the expo underscores the industry’s commitment to meeting consumer demands while promoting healthier eating habits. This initiative sets a positive example for other food sectors, encouraging them to prioritize responsible consumption and portion control.
