Exploring Grand Tour Italia in Bologna: A New Culinary and Cultural Adventure

In a recent development, Bologna, the vibrant capital of the Emilia Romagna region, proudly announced the inauguration of Grand Tour Italia. This revamped theme park, curated by the visionary Italian entrepreneur Oscar Farinetti, offers a unique opportunity for both local and international travelers to delve into the rich culinary and cultural tapestry of Italy’s diverse 20 regions. The aim of Grand Tour Italia is to ignite the curiosity and appetite of visitors, inspiring them to explore further beyond the walls of the theme park.

The birth of Grand Tour Italia marks a significant transformation from its predecessor, FICO Eataly World, which made its debut back in 2017. Despite FICO’s initial success in attracting 2.8 million visitors in its first year, the attendance dwindled over time, leading to its closure in February 2024. However, Farinetti saw this setback as an opportunity for growth and invested 15 million euros towards reimagining the project. With a new CEO, Piero Bagnasco, at the helm, Grand Tour Italia aspires to welcome 1.5 million visitors in its inaugural year and achieve a revenue of 30 million euros by 2025.

Immersive Experience Celebrating Italian Cuisine

While food remains at the heart of Grand Tour Italia, the theme park goes beyond mere gastronomy. Each region of Italy boasts a unique culinary identity shaped by its history, geography, and cultural heritage. From the diverse ingredients to the myriad pasta shapes and traditional wines, Italian cuisine is a testament to the country’s rich tapestry of flavors. The thematic layout of Grand Tour Italia, comprised of twenty-three porticoes serving as gateways to each region, draws inspiration from Bologna’s iconic Medieval porticoes, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Grand Tour Italia’s commitment to environmental sustainability is reflected in its sourcing of organic and sustainable products. Collaborating with esteemed partners such as Scuola Holden, Coldiretti, and Slow Food, the theme park aims to promote regional biodiversity and preserve local food traditions. Beyond culinary delights, visitors can explore historical and architectural treasures, participate in educational activities, and learn about the customs and traditions of each region. The park also features a bookstore, amusement park, Adventure Park, and a diverse schedule of events ranging from music performances to cooking lessons.

Inspired by Wolfgang von Goethe’s “Italian Journey,” Grand Tour Italia offers travelers a transformative experience that mirrors the historic Grand Tours of the past. By encapsulating the essence of Italy’s major cities, charming villages, and picturesque towns in a single location, the theme park serves as a prelude to a deeper exploration of Italy’s rich cultural heritage. According to founder Oscar Farinetti, Grand Tour Italia is not just a tourist destination but a celebration of Italy’s diversity and cultural splendors, inviting visitors to taste, explore, and experience the country in all its glory.

Embark on a culinary and cultural adventure at Grand Tour Italia, open Thursday through Sunday from 11 AM to 11 PM. With free entrance and parking, the theme park is easily accessible by car, taxi, or bus from the historical center of Bologna.
