Exploring the Best American Whiskeys in 2024

American whiskey has a rich history that dates back to the seventeenth century when colonists first introduced it to the North American continent. Initially consumed as a raw and unaged spirit, it has undergone a significant transformation over the centuries. The result is a profoundly complex liquid that has captured the attention of whiskey connoisseurs around the world.

In recent years, there has been a surge in the popularity of American whiskeys, leading to a boom in the market. According to a report from IBIS World, there were over 740 whiskey and bourbon distilleries operating in the United States in 2023, marking an increase of 11.6% from the previous year.

One of the most prestigious events in the whiskey world is the World Whiskies Awards, established in 2007 by Whiskey Magazine. This annual event uses a blind taste-testing format, where over 200 judges from around the globe sample and evaluate over 1,500 whiskeys to determine the best of the best.

Here are six American whiskeys that stood out and took home the coveted World’s Best crown:

F.E.W. Spirits, based in Evanston, Illinois, was founded in 2011 and is known for its small-batch artisanal whiskeys. Their American Straight Whiskey, a blend of rye, bourbon, and malt whiskeys, received the World’s Best American Style Whiskey Award. Judges praised its sweet and spicy flavors, noting a touch of fresh sweetness on the nose and honey and baking spice on the palate.

Uncle Nearest, founded in 2017, is the most successful Black-owned distillery globally. Their 1856 Premium Aged Whiskey, named the World’s Best Tennessee Whiskey, follows the Lincoln Country Process and uses sugar maple charcoal to filter the liquid. Judges described notes of nutmeg, black pepper, butterscotch, and subtle baking spices with a mellow finish.

Laws Whiskey House, based in Denver, Colorado, has gained recognition for its unique spirit aged at high altitudes. Their Four Grain Bourbon Cask Strength was named the World’s Best Small Batch Bourbon, featuring a grain bill of corn, wheat, rye, and barley. Judges noted pralines, honey, cinnamon, and a lingering finish with no sting.

Dating back to 1888, Four Roses is renowned for its flavorful bourbons. Their Single Barrel Bourbon was named the World’s Best Single Barrel Bourbon, with a complex profile of vanilla, caramel, and fresh apples. Each bottling is selected by Master Distiller Brent Elliot, ensuring a high-quality product.

Breckenridge Distillery, situated in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, was awarded the World’s Best Finished Bourbon for its Port Cask Finish whiskey. Judges highlighted flavors of buttered popcorn, raisins, maraschino cherry, and a sweet icing, followed by a round and balanced finish.

For bourbon enthusiasts seeking the best of the best, 1792 12-Year-Old was named the World’s Best Bourbon. Produced by the Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, this high Rye bourbon is aged in charred American white oak barrels for at least twelve years. Judges praised its well-balanced expression with notes of sweetness, chocolate, and caramel.

American whiskeys have truly made their mark on the global stage, with these award-winning expressions showcasing the innovation, craftsmanship, and dedication of distillers across the United States. Cheers to the continued evolution and excellence of American whiskey!
