Exploring the Symington Family’s New Venture in Alentejo

The Symington Family, renowned for their exquisite Port wines from the Douro Valley, has taken a bold step into uncharted territory with the creation of Quinta da Fonte Souto wines. This new venture marks their first exploration outside the familiar landscapes of the Douro Valley and into the southern Alentejo region of Portugal.

The vineyards of Quinta da Fonte Souto are located in the Portalegre subregion, nestled amidst the São Mamede mountain range at an elevation of 3,363 feet above sea level. This high-altitude appellation provides a cool-climate environment, a rarity in the typically hot and arid Alentejo region. The vineyards, reaching heights of up to 1,800 feet, benefit from these unique conditions, producing grapes of exceptional quality.

The Quinta da Fonte Souto branco (2021) is a harmonious blend of 75% Arinto and 25% Verdelho, sourced from vines cultivated at 1,600 feet. This full-bodied white wine exudes ripe yellow and tropical fruits, complemented by herbal notes, oak spice, and a zesty lemon curd finish. A portion of the blend undergoes fermentation and aging in oak barrels, adding depth and complexity to the wine. Priced at $26, it offers a complete and satisfying experience.

The estate’s red wine (2019) is a blend dominated by Alicante Bouchet and Syrah, with smaller additions of Alfrocheiro and old vine varietals. This rich and dense red wine showcases flavors of plum, blackberry, and cherry, accented by hints of sweet date and fig. Full-bodied, complex, and layered, it is a perfect match for hearty dishes like roasted lamb or game, as well as casual barbecue fare. Despite its premium quality, the red wine is priced affordably at $26.

The Symington Family’s expansion into the Alentejo region with Quinta da Fonte Souto wines demonstrates their commitment to innovation and exploration. By pushing the boundaries of tradition and leveraging the diverse terroir of Portugal, they have introduced a new range of wines that showcase the potential of this lesser-known region. With their expertise and passion for winemaking, the Symington Family continues to captivate wine enthusiasts with each new venture.
