Exploring Uganda’s National Parks with Rafiki Safaris

Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is home to over half of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas. As visitors trek through this ancient forest, they have the opportunity to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. The park also boasts a diverse range of wildlife, including over 350 bird species and 120 other mammals.

Located in the country’s north-west, Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area, covering some 3,840 square kilometers. The highlight of this park is the Murchison Falls, where the River Nile squeezes through a narrow 7-meter gorge before plunging 43 meters with a thunderous roar. Visitors can also enjoy a Nile boat cruise to take in the abundance of wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, crocodiles, hippos, and lions.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is famous for its tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector. In addition to spotting lions lounging on fig trees, visitors can explore the park’s diverse ecosystem of savannahs, wetlands, forests, and lakes, home to over 95 mammal species and 600 bird species. Game drives offer the chance to see buffaloes, elephants, leopards, and the elusive Ugandan kob, while hippos and crocodiles can be found along the banks of the Kazinga Channel.

Uganda’s remote north-eastern corner is home to the somewhat isolated Kidepo Valley National Park, a hidden gem that is often overlooked by tourists. The park is home to elephants, zebras, cheetahs, ostriches, and the rare roan antelope, relying on the Kidepo and Narus rivers for sustenance. Game drives through the park offer a special and intimate experience, with hardly any other vehicles in sight. Visitors can also learn about the Karamoja culture, known for their rich traditions and colorful ceremonies.

The Rwenzori Mountains National Park offers a unique climbing experience for adventurers. The 7-day circular tour from the trailhead at Mihunga, followed by an ascent of the Bujuku Valley via Nyabitaba, provides climbers with a chance to acclimatize before reaching the peaks. A traverse of the Scott Elliot and Freshfield passes is followed by a descent through the Mubuku Valley. Climbers can scale the snow peaks while enjoying the exceptional scenery that the park has to offer.

While exploring Uganda’s national parks is a remarkable experience, there is much to see beyond the country’s borders as well. Neighboring countries like Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda offer rich and diverse African experiences. Witness the Great Migration in Kenya’s Masai Mara or visit a local Maasai community to learn about their culture firsthand. Safaris to the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania offer UNESCO World Heritage sites known for their abundant wildlife and stunning landscapes.
