Frontier Airlines recently introduced a new add-on option called UpFront Plus, aimed at providing passengers with extra room in the front of their planes. This add-on ensures that there is no middle seat neighbor, offering a more comfortable experience for travelers.
The UpFront Plus option will be available in the first two rows of Frontier’s Airbus planes, where the middle seat will be blocked off. Passengers who choose this seating arrangement will also benefit from an additional four to five inches of legroom compared to most seats on the plane. The airline has set prices starting at $49 for bookings made by March 20, with flights scheduled between April 10 and April 30. However, Frontier has clarified that this new seating option is not limited to a promotional offer but will be an ongoing feature.
Airlines across the spectrum, from budget carriers like Spirit and Frontier to major players like Delta, United, and American, have been exploring ways to differentiate their offerings and provide additional value to customers. This trend includes segmenting cabin classes, offering premium products at a higher price point, and implementing fees for services such as advance seat selection. For example, Spirit Airlines provides the “Big Front Seat” option in its Airbus cabins, catering to passengers looking for more space and comfort.
Revenue Generation
Fees play a crucial role for budget airlines like Frontier, as they contribute significantly to the overall revenue generated by the company. These airlines often charge extra for various services, ranging from seat selection to carry-on baggage, in addition to the base fare. In the case of Frontier, the airline generated an average of $42 per passenger from airfare in the previous year, marking a 22% decline from the previous year. However, non-fare revenue saw a slight increase of 1%, reaching almost $74 per passenger.
Frontier’s introduction of the UpFront Plus option reflects the airline’s commitment to enhancing the passenger experience and providing more choices for travelers. By offering additional space and comfort at a reasonable price point, Frontier aims to attract customers looking for a more premium flying experience. As the airline industry continues to evolve, it is likely that we will see more innovations and enhancements from airlines seeking to stay competitive in the market.
