As we approach the holiday season, travel experts predict a significant increase in the number of people hitting the road and the skies compared to pre-pandemic levels. AAA forecasts that from December 21 to January 1, approximately 119.3 million Americans will embark on journeys of 50 miles or more from home. This projection not only surpasses the previous high in 2019 by a slim margin but also highlights a surge of 3 million more travelers compared to last year. The enthusiasm for holiday travel signifies a strong recovery and a desire to reconnect with family and friends during this cherished time of the year.
An astounding 90% of holiday travelers—about 107 million—are expected to travel by car this season. This statistic almost matches the all-time high of 108 million recorded in 2019, yet it reflects a significant increase from last year’s numbers. The enduring preference for road trips underscores a fundamental shift in how people choose to travel, likely propelled by the comfort and convenience of personal vehicles, particularly in light of ongoing concerns over crowded public transport during peak seasons.
In addition to road travel, AAA anticipates that air travel will also reach unprecedented levels this holiday season, with an estimated 7.85 million individuals taking to the skies. This figure is a notable rise from last year’s previous record of 7.5 million air travelers. However, holiday airfare is also expected to rise, with average domestic tickets priced around $830—a 4% increase—while international flights soar to an average of $1,630, marking a staggering 13% uptick.
While the majority will opt for cars and planes, alternative travel means—such as buses, trains, and cruise ships—are also gaining popularity. AAA forecasts that 4.47 million people will utilize these options this year, showcasing a 10% increase from the previous holiday season. Of particular note, cruise bookings have surged by 37%, reflecting a renewed interest in vacationing at sea and exploration of maritime destinations.
Analyzing travel data reveals warm-weather destinations reign supreme among holiday travelers. Top domestic spots include Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami, highlighting the appeal of sunny retreats. On the international front, places such as Punta Cana, Cancun, and Costa Rica emerge as favored hotspots. This trend illustrates not only a desire for relaxation after a challenging year but also an inclination towards destinations that offer a mix of adventure and leisure.
“The holiday season is a special time when lifelong memories are created, and travel plays a vital role in fostering those connections,” emphasizes Stacey Barber, AAA Travel’s vice president. With pandemic restrictions lifting and travel confidence rising, the upcoming holiday period demonstrates a collective yearning to gather and celebrate. This year, the evidence points to a heartwarming resurgence of travel, reinforcing the emotional significance it holds for families and friends during the festive season.
