JetBlue Charging Higher Checked-Bag Fees During Peak Travel Periods

JetBlue has quietly implemented a new policy to charge higher checked-bag fees during peak travel periods. This change came into effect for bookings beginning on March 22nd, marking the second price increase for checked bags made by the airline this year.

Under the new policy, JetBlue is now charging $50 for the first checked bag on domestic and short-haul international flights during peak flying times, which is a $5 increase from off-peak flights. Additionally, the second checked bag costs $70 for peak flights, $10 more than off-peak flights. However, travelers have the option to receive a $10 discount by paying for the bag more than 24 hours ahead of check-in.

JetBlue’s definition of peak periods covers a significant portion of the year, including most of April, late June through Labor Day weekend, and a substantial part of late November through early January. For transatlantic flights, the airline has a separate bag fee chart.

Despite the new fees, there are exceptions for certain passengers. Travelers who purchase premium tickets, own a JetBlue co-branded credit card, or have status with the airline are still able to check bags for free.

JetBlue explained that the increase in checked-bag fees is a response to the rising costs of transporting luggage. The airline cited factors such as increased wages and higher fuel costs as contributing to the need for the adjustment in fees. In a statement, JetBlue mentioned that they are making these changes to help the company return to profitability and offset the increased costs incurred, especially since the onset of the Covid pandemic.

JetBlue emphasized that while they do not favor raising fees, these adjustments are necessary to maintain profitability. By modifying fees for additional services utilized by specific customers, particularly during peak travel periods with limited cargo hold space, JetBlue aims to keep base fares as low as possible. This strategy allows the airline to continue offering customer favorites such as seatback TVs and high-speed WiFi for free.

JetBlue’s decision to increase checked-bag fees aligns with similar moves made by other airlines in the industry. In February, the airline raised the fee for the first checked bag from $35 to $45, matching the fee adjustments implemented by its competitors.
