Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) recently found itself at the center of controversy after deciding to alter its itinerary, deviating from sailing near the Antarctica mainland. The cruise in question was the 14-day voyage of the Norwegian Star, initially set to include a visit to Paradise Bay, which is located close to the Antarctica mainland. However, the schedule was unexpectedly changed, redirecting the ship 200 miles north to Admiralty Bay, near Antarctica’s South Shetland Islands.
Unhappy with the sudden change, one guest, who goes by the handle @ruinedvacation on TikTok, took to social media to voice her frustration. In a video that has since gone viral, she highlights her disappointment at not being informed about the itinerary change until after setting sail. The video garnered a significant 3.4 million views, drawing widespread attention from both the public and the media.
@ruinedvacation’s main grievance is that NCL allegedly altered the trip’s description to exclude any mention of Antarctica and removed the visit to Paradise Bay from the itinerary. Furthermore, she claims that NCL provided minimal explanation for the sudden change, simply citing “operational reasons.”
In response to the backlash, a spokesperson from NCL acknowledged the altered itinerary but provided reasoning behind their decision. The spokesperson noted that the change was intended to offer guests additional time to explore Stanley, the capital city of the Falkland Islands. They explained that modifications are sometimes necessary to optimize itineraries or accommodate specific circumstances. The revised itinerary aimed to enhance the overall guest experience by replacing the cruise to Paradise Bay with a cruise to Admiralty Bay. The spokesperson also mentioned that a recent regulatory requirement imposed a reduced speed near the Gerlache Strait and South Shetland Islands, which impacted the original itinerary.
For the 2023-24 Antarctica season, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) introduced new regulations to protect whales in specific geofenced areas. These regulations mandated a 10-knot speed restriction. IAATO committed to implementing these measures starting from 2021, leading to further modifications in cruise itineraries within the region.
Norwegian Cruise Line’s decision to change its itinerary, particularly concerning its exclusion of the Antarctica mainland, has sparked widespread discontent among passengers.
