Preserving the Natural Beauty of Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park, located in Croatia, is known for its stunning lakes and waterfalls that are connected by beautiful trails and wooden bridges. The trails, spanning a total of approximately 22 kilometres, are a combination of stone and gravel, making them easy to walk on. The wooden bridges, made of chestnut timber, are not only aesthetically pleasing but also serve the purpose of linking different parts of the Park. The maintenance of these trails and bridges is crucial in order to ensure visitor safety and preserve the natural beauty of this gem.

Josip Movčan’s Contribution

Josip Movčan, a forestry engineer and long-time manager of the Park, played a significant role in transforming the visitor experience at Plitvice Lakes National Park. By introducing wooden chestnut footbridges, Movčan allowed visitors to move freely through the unique landscapes of waterfalls and lakes without disturbing the natural ecosystem. His emphasis on education and awareness among workers and visitors about the importance of protecting nature has left a lasting impact on the Park.

Plitvice Lakes National Park has recently completed significant projects to modernize and expand key trails and viewpoints. The reconstruction of the trail leading to the Big Waterfall, the largest waterfall in the Park, has been widened and secured to increase visitor safety and comfort. Additionally, a new panoramic viewpoint, Tomićevo Pogledalo, has been opened, offering breathtaking views of the first five lakes. Entrance 1 has also expanded its viewpoint to provide visitors with a magnificent view of the Big Waterfall.

Regular cleaning, repairs, and improvements of the trails and bridges in the Park are essential for ensuring visitor safety and accessibility. A dedicated department within the Park is responsible for monitoring and maintaining the paths on a daily basis. Using natural materials such as stone, wood, and sand for repairs ensures that the trails blend seamlessly into the natural environment. Handrails, rest benches, and information boards along the trails enhance the overall visitor experience.

Visitor Experience and Sustainability

Plitvice Lakes National Park offers visitors diverse visiting programs, established rules of conduct, and customized infrastructure to preserve the ecosystem and original beauty of the landscape. The use of environmentally friendly materials and techniques in the maintenance and improvement of visitor infrastructure ensures that the Park remains accessible and safe for all visitors. By taking these measures, the Park aims to preserve its natural heritage for future generations to enjoy.
