Spending time with children, especially for an extended period, can be a daunting task for many adults. The constant need for entertainment and the fear of hearing the dreaded “I’m bored,” can create a sense of pressure to constantly provide engaging activities. Now, imagine being on a cruise ship with limited space and resources to cater to children of all ages. This presents an entirely different challenge, one that requires careful planning and innovation on the part of cruise lines to ensure that kids remain entertained throughout their journey.
Cruise lines are well aware of the importance of providing engaging activities for children on board. From waterparks on the top deck to zip lines and roller coasters, cruise ships are constantly evolving to meet the entertainment needs of young passengers. Royal Caribbean International’s Icon of the Seas features a waterpark, while Norwegian Prima and Viva have racetracks and Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras, Celebration, and Jubilee offer the Bolt roller coaster. These attractions are just a few examples of how cruise lines are intentionally designing their ships to keep kids entertained.
Princess Cruises took a unique approach to making their ships more family-friendly by creating the Park19 family zone on the Sun Princess. This area features nine activities, including a ropes course and a motorized zipline called the Sea Breeze. MSC Cruises is also focusing on innovative activities for kids, with Matteo Mancini, MSC’s senior manager of youth entertainment, highlighting the importance of engaging the new generation of children who have varied interests and get bored easily.
Interactive Learning Experiences
To cater to the evolving interests of children, MSC Cruises hosts board meetings with kids to gather feedback on what activities they would like to see on board. This feedback directly influenced the development of the “Drone Academy,” where kids can learn how to pilot drones on the ship’s indoor Sportplex or outdoor sports court. Additionally, MSC offers access to a 3D printer during arts and crafts sessions, allowing kids to bring their designs to life. These interactive learning experiences not only entertain kids but also inspire creativity and innovation.
The emphasis on interactive and hands-on activities for kids onboard cruise ships goes beyond mere entertainment. It is about empowering children to explore their creativity and turn their ideas into reality. By providing opportunities for kids to engage in activities like drone piloting and 3D printing, cruise lines are fostering a sense of accomplishment and encouraging children to think outside the box. This focus on creativity is just as important as providing thrilling attractions like waterslides and roller coasters, as it challenges children to explore new interests and skills.
The entertainment landscape for kids on cruise ships is evolving, with a strong focus on innovation and creativity. Cruise lines are constantly seeking new ways to engage young passengers and provide them with memorable experiences. Through strategic attractions, interactive learning experiences, and opportunities for creative expression, cruise ships are setting a new standard for kids’ entertainment at sea. By empowering children to create and explore, cruise lines are not only keeping kids entertained but also inspiring them to discover new talents and interests during their journey.
