Royal Caribbean has made headlines once again with the launch of its latest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas. As the largest cruise ship on Earth, it begs the question: just how much bigger can Royal Caribbean’s ships get? During a recent press conference, the CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, Jason Liberty, addressed this question and shed light on the constraints they face when it comes to building bigger ships.

One of the main factors that dictate the size of Royal Caribbean’s cruise ships is the limitations imposed by various ports around the world. Many ports have specifically designed their facilities to accommodate Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships, which have become iconic in the industry. As a result, the brand is compelled to keep the Icon class to a similar size in order to ensure smooth operations in these ports.

The Icon of the Seas, with its impressive 250,800 gross tons, is 6% larger than its predecessor, the Wonder of the Seas. The Wonder of the Seas held the title of the world’s largest cruise ship prior to the launch of the Icon. Despite this increase in size, Royal Caribbean’s senior vice president of sales, Vicki Freed, doesn’t anticipate a significant growth in size within the Icon class. She mentioned that there may be a small incremental increase of an inch or two, but nothing major.

While the Icon of the Seas represents the pinnacle of Royal Caribbean’s current ship size, there is already a second ship in the Icon class under construction. The Star of the Seas is expected to enter service in the summer of 2025. It remains to be seen whether this upcoming ship will introduce any groundbreaking changes in terms of size, or if it will follow a similar trajectory as its predecessors.

Royal Caribbean has consistently pushed the boundaries of ship size and innovation, captivating the imaginations of cruise enthusiasts worldwide.
