The 2024 Scotch Whisky Masters: A Closer Look at the Winners

The Scotch Whisky Masters recently announced the results of their 2024 blind tasting competition, showcasing the best the whisky category has to offer. With an expert panel of judges and a wide range of sub-styles being evaluated, it’s clear that the competition was fierce. One standout in particular was Royal Brackla, a 212-year-old distillery that took home two Master medals for their highland single malts.

Royal Brackla’s 21-year-old whisky, finished in a combination of Oloroso, Palo Cortado, and Pedro Ximénez barrels, impressed judges with its complex flavors of cinnamon, cocoa, and maple syrup. This whisky was awarded a Master medal for its exceptional quality. Additionally, their 25-year-old expression, finished exclusively in PX barrels, stood out for its rich and robust dark fruit notes of dried figs, raisins, and leather. Both whiskies were praised for their smooth mouthfeel and lingering finish.

Pricing and Availability

While Royal Brackla’s 21-year-old whisky is relatively easy to find on US shelves for around $600 a bottle, their older 25-year-old expression is a rare gem primarily available in British markets for £1,025. Despite its limited availability, the quality of Royal Brackla’s whiskies is undeniable, making them a sought-after choice for whisky connoisseurs.

In addition to Royal Brackla, other distilleries also received recognition at the 2024 Scotch Whisky Masters. The GlenAllachie impressed with its peat-smoked Meikle Toir Sherry expression, while Kilchoman dominated the non-age-statement Islay category. John Dewar & Sons, the parent organization of Royal Brackla, also received accolades for Aultmore’s Oloroso Sherry Cask 12 Years Old and Craigellachie’s 13 Year Old expression.

American Market Trends

The US scotch whisky market has seen significant growth in recent years, with a 140% increase in super premium single malt sales in 2023 alone. Despite the growing demand for high-quality whiskies, some distilleries like Royal Brackla are still relatively unknown to American consumers. With their signature rich and fruity style, Royal Brackla’s whiskies have the potential to become favorites among scotch enthusiasts in the US.

The results of the 2024 Scotch Whisky Masters highlight the exceptional quality and diversity of whiskies being produced today. Royal Brackla’s success serves as a reminder of the craftsmanship and dedication that go into creating top-notch spirits. As more consumers discover the unique flavors and profiles of these award-winning whiskies, the future looks bright for the scotch whisky industry.
