The Dutch Government’s Proposal to Reduce Capacity at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport

The Dutch government has once again put forward a plan to decrease capacity at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport by introducing restrictions on night flights and certain aircraft by the year 2025. This initiative aims to alleviate noise pollution at one of the largest airports in the Netherlands.

In a letter to parliament on May 24, Dutch infrastructure minister Mark Harbers outlined a set of revised measures to curb noise levels at Schiphol Airport. These measures include reducing the number of night flights in 2025 from 32,000 to 27,000 and prohibiting the noisiest aircraft, such as the Boeing 747-400, from operating between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

This recent proposal comes after a previous effort by the Dutch government to decrease capacity at Schiphol by 20%, which was met with significant backlash and later abandoned in November. However, a local court’s ruling in March compelled the government to take further action to address noise pollution at the airport following complaints from nearby residents.

Netherlands flag carrier KLM has voiced its disapproval of the government’s latest proposal, characterizing it as “harmful and not proportionate.” KLM expressed concerns about the blanket ban on certain aircraft types by 2025, citing the lack of adequate time for the industry to find viable alternatives. The airline emphasized the need for a balanced approach to reducing noise impact rather than a sole focus on capacity reduction.

KLM argued that the noise-reduction target could be met without significantly cutting the number of flights at Schiphol. The airline highlighted its plans to renew its fleet with quieter aircraft and its previous suggestion for higher airport fees for noisy planes. KLM intends to thoroughly assess the proposed measures before presenting its detailed vision on the matter.
