The Influence of Gen Z and Millennials

Natalie Giske, from American Express Lifestyle Services, highlighted the growing influence of Gen Z and Millennials in the luxury travel sector. These younger demographics now account for 30% of global luxury spending, a significant increase from previous years. Their preferences lean towards wellness, experiences, food and beverage offerings, and personalized service. They are looking for travel experiences that cater to their individual interests and expect providers to deliver on their promises. This poses a unique challenge for hoteliers to cater to the evolving needs of this demographic.

Namai Bishop, founder of LuxePrive Travel, emphasized the increasing trend of experience-driven travel among younger travelers. Gen Z and Millennials are more likely to plan their trips around specific experiences, such as dining at a renowned restaurant or participating in a unique activity. They are less interested in traditional sightseeing and more focused on creating memorable moments during their travels. This shift in mindset requires travel advisors to tailor their recommendations to align with the experiential preferences of this demographic.

Despite the prevalence of online research tools like ChatGPT, Giske highlighted the continued importance of travel advisors, particularly for bucket-list trips. According to data from the American Express Travel Trends Report, 58% of Gen Z and Millennial travelers prefer to use a travel agent or trusted advisor for booking major trips throughout the year. While tech-savvy travelers may conduct their research and create itineraries independently, they still value the expertise and personalized recommendations provided by travel advisors. This underscores the critical role that travel advisors play in curating unique and tailored travel experiences for their clients.
