Dubai’s leadership recently gave the green light to an ambitious project that will reshape the landscape of air travel in the region. The $35 billion plan involves the construction of a new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, which will significantly increase its size and capacity. According to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, the airport will have a capacity to accommodate up to 260 million passengers, making it the largest airport in the world.
Digital renderings of the planned airport reveal a futuristic design, featuring expansive infrastructure, enormous terminals, and cutting-edge technology. The airport will be located in Dubai South, at the southern end of the emirate, where a new city will be built to accommodate the growing demand for housing and commercial space. The development is expected to attract leading companies in the logistics and air transport sectors, further solidifying Dubai’s position as a global hub for trade and commerce.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, CEO of Emirates Airline, expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its importance in providing unparalleled travel experiences and logistics capabilities. The new airport is poised to become the new home for Emirates, Flydubai, and other airline partners, connecting Dubai to destinations around the world. The project aligns with Dubai’s D33 economic agenda, which aims to double the city’s economy by 2033 through increased investment, talent acquisition, and economic diversification.
The Al Maktoum International airport, also known as Dubai World Central (DWC), is expected to cover 27 square miles upon completion, with a projected capacity of 260 million passengers annually. In addition, the airport aims to handle 12 million tons of cargo per year, further enhancing Dubai’s role as a major logistics and transport hub. The first phase of the project is anticipated to be completed within 10 years, with a capacity to accommodate 150 million passengers annually.
