The Hawaii Seaglider Initiative (HSI) has received a significant boost with Southwest Airlines joining as the newest member. This consortium aims to revolutionize transportation in the Hawaiian Islands through the development and implementation of electric seagliders. The project is centered around Regent’s prototype Viceroy craft, which has already achieved its first flight.
Regent’s seagliders will utilize existing battery technology to transport up to 12 passengers at a range of 180 miles and a top speed of 180 mph. The craft will take off from the water, transitioning from hydrofoil propulsion to flight, maintaining a wingspan close to the water’s surface to benefit from ground effect and reduce drag. This innovative technology has the potential to offer an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to ferries and traditional interisland flying.
Regent has already secured orders for over 600 seagliders worth more than $9 billion from airlines and ferry operators across six continents. Among the launch customers are Mesa Airlines, Mokulele, and Southern Airways Express. Strategic investors include Hawaiian Airlines, Japan Airlines (JAL), Mesa, Lockheed Martin, and Mark Cuban Enterprises. This strong industry support indicates the promising future of electric seaglider transport.

A route feasibility study estimates that a seaglider ticket from Oahu to Maui could cost as low as $30, making it an accessible option for travelers.
