Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) is gearing up for a major transformation at Great Stirrup Cay, their private island in the Bahamas. The company expects that the construction of a new two-ship pier on the island will lead to a significant increase in guest counts, projecting a growth of more than 50% within the first 12 months of operation. This development is a crucial part of NCLH’s strategy to enhance the overall guest experience and expand their presence in the Caribbean.
By introducing a pier at Great Stirrup Cay, NCLH aims to streamline the transportation process and increase the overall capacity of visitors to the island. This infrastructure improvement will not only make it easier for cruise ships to dock at the island but also provide an opportunity for better monetization of the key asset. NCLH CEO, Harry Sommer, emphasized that the pier will elevate the guest experience by ensuring that visits to Great Stirrup Cay are more consistent and reliable, resulting in higher guest satisfaction and potentially greater revenue generation.
Currently, Great Stirrup Cay can only be accessed through tender boats from cruise ships, limiting the number of passengers that can visit the island at a given time. With the new pier in place, NCLH anticipates a significant increase in passenger traffic, with an estimated 50% rise in the number of annual visitors. This growth aligns with the company’s overall expansion plans, including the addition of new ships to their fleet between 2026 and 2036. The completion of the pier is strategically timed to coincide with these developments, ensuring optimal capacity utilization and operational efficiency for NCLH.
One of the key advantages of having a pier at Great Stirrup Cay is the enhanced accessibility it provides, especially during inclement weather conditions. Sommer highlighted that the new infrastructure will minimize the need to skip visits to the island due to rough seas, ultimately leading to higher guest satisfaction levels. Great Stirrup Cay already offers a wide range of amenities, including ziplines, cabanas, a spa, a private beach, and various watersport activities. With the added certainty of being able to dock at the island consistently, NCLH expects to see a boost in passenger engagement and spending, further solidifying Great Stirrup Cay as one of their premier destinations in the Caribbean.
NCLH’s investment in the construction of a pier at Great Stirrup Cay demonstrates their commitment to delivering exceptional cruise experiences and driving sustainable growth in the region. The anticipated increase in guest counts, combined with the improved reliability and accessibility of the island, positions NCLH for continued success in the ever-evolving cruise industry.
