The Future of Royal Caribbean International: A Glimpse into the Discovery Class

During a media briefing aboard the Utopia of the Seas, CEO Michael Bayley hinted at an exciting new ship class in the works, known as the Discovery class. He emphasized that it will offer something innovative and unique, without revealing specific details. This new class is expected to cater to ports that are currently inaccessible to larger ships due to bridges, such as Baltimore and Tampa.

Bayley mentioned that simply making the ship broader and less high is not the solution. However, Royal Caribbean is exploring ways to ensure that the Discovery class can navigate these limitations. By introducing smaller ships that still provide the same level of luxury and amenities, they hope to open up new destinations for cruise travelers.

In addition to the upcoming Discovery class, Royal Caribbean also announced plans to deploy a second ship, the Ovation of the Seas, to Los Angeles in the spring. This Quantum-class ship, which first set sail in 2016, will offer a variety of cruise itineraries starting May 28. The decision to move this vessel signifies the company’s commitment to growing its presence on the West Coast.

Bayley and Royal Caribbean’s leadership team expressed their appreciation for travel advisors and their role in promoting the brand. Bayley mentioned that successful sales of the Ovation of the Seas could lead to the deployment of an Icon class ship, similar to the one that debuted in January as the Icon of the Seas. Vice President Vicki Freed encouraged travel advisors to maximize their sales efforts to bring larger ships to the Los Angeles market.

This move to Los Angeles is just the beginning of Royal Caribbean’s plans for expansion. Bayley has alluded to the potential of stationing future Icon class ships in other strategic locations. During a preview cruise of the Icon of the Seas in January, he hinted at the possibility of Texas being a future homeport for these innovative vessels.

As Royal Caribbean International continues to push boundaries and explore new opportunities, the Discovery class represents a glimpse into the company’s forward-thinking approach. With a focus on accessibility, innovation, and growth, Royal Caribbean is poised to redefine the cruise industry once again.
