Spirit Airlines recently announced that it will be deferring deliveries of new Airbus planes in an effort to boost liquidity for the company. CEO Ted Christie explained that while these steps are not ideal, they are necessary for the long-term health of the company.
The deferral of Airbus planes that were originally scheduled to be delivered from the second quarter of 2025 through the end of 2026 will now be pushed back to 2030 and 2031. This strategic move is expected to increase the airline’s liquidity by approximately $340 million over the next two years. By postponing the deliveries, Spirit aims to reset the business and focus on its core operations amidst changes in the competitive environment.

The Air Line Pilots Association, Spirit’s pilots’ union, is exploring voluntary measures to limit the number of pilot furloughs. However, the decision to furlough pilots is expected to have a significant impact on the pilot group, especially with the retirement of the A319 fleet and the continuing Pratt & Whitney GTF engine issue.
