The Michelin Guide Unveils Inaugural Michelin Key Recipients in the U.S.

The Michelin Guide recently announced the launch of a new hotel rating system called the Michelin Key. While the Michelin Guide has long been known for its Michelin Star restaurant ratings, this new system aims to recognize excellence in the hospitality sector. The Michelin Key system will rate hotels on three levels – One Key, Two Keys, and Three Keys, signifying a special stay, an exceptional stay, and an extraordinary stay respectively.

According to Gwendal Poullennec, the international director of the Michelin Guide, there are five core elements that will determine whether a property is deserving of a Michelin Key. These include a prime location that enhances the guest experience, excellence in interior design and architecture, consistent quality in service, alignment between price and experience level, and a sense of individuality and authenticity.

The first batch of Michelin Key winners in the U.S. was announced, with 124 hotels across seven main tourism destinations making the list. Notable winners included The Little Nell in Aspen, Faena Hotel Miami Beach, and Aman New York, all of which received high ratings. The intention behind the Michelin Key system is to create an international benchmark where the value of a rating remains consistent across different locations.

More Michelin Key announcements are expected in the coming months, with winners from Spain, Italy, and Japan set to be revealed on specific dates. The Michelin Guide plans to continue expanding the Key system to include properties in various countries, providing travelers with a reliable benchmark for quality and excellence in hospitality.

Integration with Tablet Hotels

In a bid to enhance their offerings, the Michelin Guide acquired Tablet Hotels in 2018, allowing for the integration of hotel-booking capabilities into their digital platform. Travelers can now filter for and book Michelin Key hotels directly through the Michelin Guide platform, making it a one-stop shop for all their travel needs. This move also benefits travel advisors, as Michelin Guide hotel bookings are commissionable.

Gwendal Poullennec emphasized the importance of mastering technology to provide a seamless booking experience for travelers. By integrating the booking channel within the Michelin Guide platform, travelers can easily find hotel and restaurant recommendations, make bookings, and share their experiences with the Michelin Guide team. The goal is to provide a comprehensive and user-friendly platform for travelers seeking top-notch hospitality experiences.

The Michelin Key system represents a significant step in recognizing excellence in the hotel sector. By setting clear criteria for ratings and expanding the system globally, the Michelin Guide aims to create a standardized benchmark for quality in hospitality.
