The Next Chapter for HX: Gebhard Rainer Takes the Helm

HX, the cruise line previously known as Hurtigruten Expeditions, has recently appointed Gebhard Rainer as its new CEO. Rainer, who is currently serving as the CEO of Sandals Resorts International, will remain with Sandals until June 30. His tenure at Sandals has been characterized by numerous contributions to the organization over the past six years. With Rainer’s departure, the existing leadership team at Sandals, led by executive chairman Adam Stewart, will be assuming additional responsibilities as they assess their long-term requirements.

The Transition to Independence

The appointment of Rainer as CEO comes at a crucial time for HX as it progresses through its transition into a stand-alone brand separate from Hurtigruten, a specialist in Norwegian coastal cruises. As part of this process, HX is in the process of establishing an independent management team. Rainer will be taking over from Daniel Skjeldam, who had previously served as CEO for both Hurtigruten Group and HX during the initial stages of the expedition line’s transformation. Skjeldam will be transitioning to the role of board member for Hurtigruten Group starting on July 15. Skjeldam expressed his belief that the timing for introducing a dedicated CEO for HX is ideal, given the finalization of the separation between Hurtigruten and HX.

Rainer’s appointment is a crucial element of the brand’s strategic roadmap, given his extensive leadership background, familiarity with the U.S. market, and track record of success at Sandals – a company with strong connections to the travel industry. Rainer joined Sandals in 2018, following his role as Hyatt’s CFO. His experience and insights are expected to play a significant role in steering HX towards fulfilling its full potential in the competitive cruise market.

As HX embarks on this new chapter under Rainer’s leadership, the cruise line is poised to leverage his expertise to drive growth, enhance customer experiences, and forge stronger partnerships within the travel sector. The transition towards autonomy presents both challenges and opportunities for HX, and Rainer’s appointment signals a commitment to navigating this evolution effectively.
