Despite the ongoing war in Ukraine, there are 160 winemakers who continue to produce wine in the country. The conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine two years ago, has resulted in a war zone that extends along the eastern border and south to the Black Sea. This region happens to be where most of Ukraine’s vineyards are located, showcasing the resilience and dedication of these winemakers in the face of adversity.
The Landscape of Ukraine’s Vineyards
Ukraine, known as a big agricultural country, produces a variety of crops such as sunflowers, barley, wheat, and corn. However, due to the war, agricultural production has been significantly affected. The vineyards in Ukraine cover around 30,000 hectares, which is about half the size of Hungary or Bulgaria, and one-sixth of the grape acreage in California. The majority of vineyards can be found in the southern part of Ukraine, particularly in the Odesa and Kherson regions.
Ukraine offers a unique opportunity for wine lovers to explore indigenous grape varieties that are not commonly found in other parts of the world. Varieties such as telti-kuruk, sukholimansky white, citronny of magarach, kokur, and odessa black provide a distinctive flavor profile that sets Ukrainian wines apart. The Odessa black grape, for example, offers a dense and intense fruit profile with a dark red grape juice that is a result of its tinturier characteristics.
Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing war, Ukrainian winemakers have managed to export their wines, with exports amounting to $9 million in 2023. While this figure may seem modest, it is a testament to the perseverance and resilience of the winemakers in the country. The presence of an export promotional organization called Wines of Ukraine highlights the efforts to promote Ukrainian wines on the international stage.
International Support and Collaboration
Various international projects are currently underway in Ukraine to support and develop the wine sector, as well as other agricultural businesses. Organizations such as USAID, the United Nations, and the Swedish government are actively involved in initiatives aimed at enhancing the growth and sustainability of Ukraine’s wine industry. The participation of Ukrainian wineries in international trade fairs like ProWein in Düsseldorf provides a platform for showcasing their wines to a global audience.
The winemakers of Ukraine demonstrate incredible resilience and dedication in continuing to produce high-quality wines despite the challenges posed by the ongoing war. By exploring indigenous grape varieties and seeking international support, Ukraine’s wine industry has the potential to thrive and make a mark on the global wine market.
