The Rise of Llamas in the Hospitality Industry

The hospitality industry is constantly evolving, with hotels looking for new and unique ways to enhance the guest experience. Forget traditional amenities like turndown service or pillow menus, the latest trend in the industry revolves around four-legged, spitting mammals – llamas. These creatures have quickly risen to fame, surpassing the once-popular goat yoga fad that dominated pre-Covid times.

While llamas and their cousins, alpacas, have long been popular in South America, they are now making a name for themselves in North America as well. At The Hythe, a Luxury Collection Resort in Vail, Colo., guests can enjoy a unique experience with llamas thanks to local tour operator Paragon Guides. The “Take a Llama to Lunch” hiking experience includes a private guided hike, a picnic lunch, and of course, the company of several llamas. These furry animals not only provide great photo opportunities but also serve a practical purpose by carrying food, water, and gear for hikers.

The llama trend has spread to other properties across the United States, with hotels and resorts incorporating them into their offerings. The Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa in Whitefield, N.H., has been a pioneer in llama programming since 2004. Guests can partake in the MVG Llama Experience, where they can walk the resort grounds with llamas for a unique and memorable experience. Additionally, the resort recently introduced the Llama Tee Time Trek, where llamas act as caddies and companions during rounds of golf.

Brush Creek Ranch in Saratoga, Wyo., is another property that has embraced llamas as part of its guest experiences. Guests can choose from a variety of llama activities, including full-day llama hikes and picnics, half-day llama hikes, and even a family-friendly “Llamas 101” experience, where guests can interact with and learn about these fascinating animals. The property also plans to launch an outdoor “paint and sip” llama experience, adding a creative element to the llama offerings.

While llamas are undeniably cute and charming, they also offer practical benefits, especially when it comes to hiking. An adult llama can easily carry a load of 50 to 90 pounds, making them ideal companions for outdoor adventures. Despite their reputation for spitting, llamas at properties like Brush Creek Ranch are described as gentle and friendly, surprising guests with their happy and interactive nature. This versatility makes llamas a valuable addition to the guest experience, providing both entertainment and utility.

The rise of llamas in the hospitality industry reflects a growing trend towards unique and memorable guest experiences. Hotels and resorts are constantly looking for ways to set themselves apart from the competition, and llamas offer a perfect blend of charm and practicality. Whether guests are looking for a leisurely llama walk or an adventurous llama hike, these animals add a special touch to any stay. As more properties embrace the llama trend, it’s clear that these delightful creatures have found their place in the world of hospitality.
