Delta Airlines has once again been awarded the title of the timeliest North American large airline in 2023. This prestigious recognition was bestowed upon Delta by Cirium, an airline analytics company that evaluates timeliness alongside the overall breadth of an airline’s operations. With its exceptional on-time performance, Delta continues to command the admiration of the industry.
In terms of on-time performance, Delta Airlines outperformed its competitors with a remarkable on-time rate of 84.5% throughout the year. This surpassed the 82.3% achieved by Alaska Airlines, positioning Delta in the top spot. American Airlines improved its standings and claimed the third position with an on-time performance of 80.6%, leapfrogging past United Airlines, which arrived on time 79.9% of the time. Southwest Airlines rounded out the top five with a respectable on-time performance of 76.4%. Cirium uses the Department of Transportation’s definition of on time, where flights arriving within 15 minutes of schedule are considered on time.
Cirium also evaluates the on-time performance of airlines operating outside the United States. In the global category, which includes airlines that daily serve at least three international regions, Avianca from Colombia claimed the top prize with an impressive on-time performance of 85.9%. Azul from Brazil closely followed with 85.7%, while Qatar Airways secured the third position with 85.1%. Delta Airlines achieved an admirable fourth-place ranking in the global category.
Turning our focus to regional performance, Iberia Express emerged as the timeliest European carrier with an on-time performance of 84.5%. All Nippon Airways (ANA) from Japan led the Asia Pacific region with a commendable on-time performance of 82.9%. The Middle East-Africa region witnessed an outstanding performance from Oman Air, achieving a stellar on-time performance rate of 92.6%. In Latin America, Copa Airlines from Panama surpassed its competitor Avianca with an impressive on-time performance of 89.5%.
Throughout 2023, Delta Airlines showcased unwavering consistency and excellence in terms of its on-time performance, earning it the title of the timeliest North American large airline.
