TMC Hospitality, a subdivision of TMC Group, made its debut in 2016 and has since made a name for itself in the boutique hotel sector. In 2018, the company introduced the Bode concept, followed by the launch of the lifestyle brand Drift in 2021. Unlike traditional hotels, TMC Hospitality’s properties offer a unique residential-style experience that sets them apart in the market.
According to TMC Hospitality co-founder and CEO Philip Bates, Drift is positioned a half-star higher than Bode, making it an upper-upscale brand, while Bode falls into the upper-midscale category. Drift tends to cater more to the solo or couple traveler, offering a luxurious experience. On the other hand, Bode targets the social group traveler, a segment often served by the Airbnb market. With multi-bedroom units, Bode aims to become the lifestyle hotel of choice for this demographic.
Having recently opened a Drift and a Bode in Nashville, Bates acknowledges the competitive landscape of the hospitality market in the city. Despite the abundance of hotel options, TMC Hospitality saw an opportunity in providing a “lifestyle light” experience that combines luxury with affordability. By focusing on technology and community engagement over traditional amenities, the company aims to appeal to guests seeking a unique stay at a competitive price point.
One of the key aspects of the Drift brand is its commitment to embracing and celebrating local culture at each property. Bates emphasizes the importance of creating a social hub within the community, where both guests and locals can come together. Events like tacos and mezcal nights in Baja California Sur have become a staple, drawing in residents and visitors alike. By prioritizing the preferences of locals in its food and beverage offerings, Drift ensures an authentic and immersive experience for all guests.
Future Expansion Plans for TMC Hospitality
Looking ahead, TMC Hospitality has secured a new project in Chicago’s Fulton Market, set to transform a former Schwinn Bicycle factory into a unique hotel experience. The company is also actively exploring opportunities in the Southeast and the San Francisco area, particularly around wine country. With a focus on regional expansion, TMC Hospitality aims to establish a strong presence in key markets, making future growth within those regions more feasible. This strategic approach aligns with the company’s vision of creating a cohesive and interconnected portfolio of boutique hotels.
