It’s hard to say, “Been there, done that” with the Galapagos Islands because my visit is probably not going to be the same as your visit. Then when you start researching, you’ll discover a wide range of other experiences that neither of us will be able to fit in. This is not about one site, one animal, or one perspective as with many other famous tourism destinations: the Galapagos is a whole island archipelago, occupying 17,000 square miles of land and ocean, with the protected marine corridor around the islands extending even further.

We’ve only reviewed three properties that were large enough to serve hundreds of our readers over the years, all on the island of Santa Cruz, where you’ll find the giant tortoises munching plants in the wild and where you can visit the Darwin Research Center.

If you only stay on Santa Cruz Island, however, that limits the places you can visit by boat to the ones that are easiest to get to for all tourists landing by plane here. If you want to add to that list or get to lesser-explored islands, you’ll want to team up with someone who knows the options for smaller hotels and villas for rent on other islands.

Private Charters & Island Hopping: Ocean Freedom on Your Terms

Many travelers are surprised to discover how regulated the itineraries have become for scheduled departures on cruises. This is all for a good reason in this fragile environment: this way the number of visitors landing somewhere on a single day is controlled and you don’t have 20 cruise ships following the same route to do the same landings. So for the normal trips on the more than 100 licensed cruises that host 10 to 100 passengers, you would match up your dates with the island stops that get you the most excited because it’s going to be a long voyage if you want to see them all.

There’s a limit to how much island life you can dive into in a place that was barely inhabited until the 20th century and still has a population kept in check: about 33,000 people live on the islands today, most of them on two main islands and a third in Puerto Ayora (on Santa Cruz) alone. Other islands have a human population of zero except when scientists are on site doing research.

Some island residents have been spent their whole life here though, adapting to the unique living conditions and following practices dictated by tradition or the unique local environment.

Much of the food served on the cruise ships comes from mainland Ecuador, with exclusions on items that have been invasive species in the past, like raspberries and blackberries. Some agriculture has moved to specific populated islands though, so you can have a true farm-to-table experience on land. Or sip an espresso brewed on site at an organic coffee farm.

Some small-scale fishing is allowed in designated waters, so you can experience a catch-of-the-day culinary experience or participate in an interactive cooking lesson right by the shore. Volunteer land options include joining local giant tortoise protection programs, reforestation efforts, or community-led sustainability projects.
