Eurail Pass: Complete Guide to Saving Money on European Train Travel (2026)
I used the Eurail pass during a trip to Europe last year and had an almost seamless experience booking trips and adjusting my schedule to meet changes to my itinerary. Let’s explore everything you need to know about the Eurail pass and how it can benefit your next trip to Europe!
What Is the Eurail Pass?
The Eurail Pass is an international rail pass that is accepted by multiple rail operators in Europe. The pass can be used on trains across 33 European countries, including Ireland and the United Kingdom, and as far out as Turkey. Without the hassle of airport security in most cities, taking the train from city center to city center can be a more convenient, cost effective, and time-saving option for travel across Europe.
Eurail vs. Interrail — What’s the Difference?
Eurail and Interrail are the same pass, except Interrail is specifically for EU Residents. The products are the same, and the pricing is very similar, with fluctuations depending on the currency exchange rate.
For example, at the time of writing, the cheapest Global Flexi 4-day pass within a month was $6 more expensive when paying in USD, and the more expensive 15-day pass within 2 months was only $10 more expensive when paying in USD versus using Euros.
Types of Eurail Passes Explained
Global Pass
The Global Pass is a product for travellers who are expecting to take trains in 2 or more countries. This pass covers all 33 countries and is limited to the days users select to use the pass. If you’re planning to take a train across country borders, this will be the pass you need.

One-Country Pass
The one-country passes are a product specific to a single country. This can be a more cost effective way if you are considering a different method of travel to cross country borders, or if you’re only planning to stay in one country. It can also be useful if you plan to spend longer periods of time in each city or destination you’re visiting.
Eurail Plus Pass
The Eurail Plus pass is a product that includes seat reservation fees in the pass for most trains. It does not include some high-demand and international train reservations, which instead you will receive credits for. Currently Plus Passes can be purchased as a Global (all 33 countries), Italy, or German variant. The Global Plus Pass allows 5 or 7 days per month, whereas Italy and German Rail Plus Passes allow 4 days in a month.
For example, the Global Plus Pass includes 3 high-demand credits, which can be used towards Eurostar (1 credit), seats in night trains (0-1 credit depending on demand), SNCF (France) (0-1 credit), and SNCF International (1 credit for most trains, 1st class from France to Italy require 2 credits).
This pass cannot be used to book or reserve sleeping cabins on night trains.

Continuous vs. Flexi Pass: Which One Makes Sense for You?
Flexi Passes are flexible rail passes that can be used for a set number of travel days within a larger window. If you have a 7 day trip but only plan to use regional or international train service for only 4 of the days, you can specify which days you would like to use the pass.

Continuous passes on the other hand include rail pass privileges for every single day for a block of time that the pass is valid for. For a 15 day continuous pass, you can use it towards trains every single day for the 15 days you allocate it for.

Flexi or Continuous are a “subcategory” of the type of rail pass you initially choose. Meaning, once you’ve chosen a Global Pass, you can choose a Flex Global Pass or a Continuous Global Pass.

Discounts for Youth, Seniors, and Families
Discounts are available for select age groups and children. Youth are eligible for 25% standard adult prices while Seniors are eligible for a 10% discount. Kids up to 11 can travel for free within the Eurail network, though adults need to specify how many children are travelling with them.
First Class vs. Second Class — Is the Upgrade Worth It?
When I took trains across Europe, I purchased a First Class pass, mostly for peace of mind and to avoid crowds. Even on non-reserved trains, the First Class cabin was typically not busy. Since I was purchasing a Youth pass, the discount made the price lower than the original price for a 2nd class ticket.
For busier trains, it was a way better experience, like during my trip from Vienna to Zurich. I was seated in a 1-2 configured train instead of a cramped 2-2 configured train with much less legroom, let alone having to deal with a seatmate that I did not know. Additionally, for international trips, the tickets would include access to pre-departure lounges.

However, the reservation fees for reservation only trains were at least equal to or higher than what a 2nd class passholder would pay.

Some countries are also grouped into regional passes rather than being sold only as standalone country passes. For example, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg are covered by the Benelux Pass.
Notable Exclusions (and What to Do About Them)
Kosovo and Albania are countries in Europe that are not included in the Eurail pass. However, the intercity trains that run in both countries are relatively inexpensive. Otherwise, you can get to Greece by ferry from Italy or Switzerland. Eurail Global pass holders can get 30% off Economy seat reservations on the ferries to Greece. Eurail Greek Island 4 or 6 day pass holders receive complimentary seat reservations instead.
How to Buy a Eurail Pass (Step-by-Step)
Where to Buy — Eurail.com vs. Third-Party Sites
Purchasing the Eurail pass directly from the Eurail website (Eurail.com) will be the simplest and easiest way to get your rail pass. Additionally, any additional discounts you are eligible for can only be redeemed through direct purchases on the website. It can also be more expensive on a third-party site versus direct purchases, even for regular adult passes.

First you want to head to Eurail’s Passes Guide webpage to find out which product will be right for your travel itinerary.
Then, select the number of travellers by age group and which rail pass you want to purchase.
Press the shopping cart button to add it to your cart. You can add multiple products to the same cart.

After adding it to your cart and confirming all the passes you’re about to purchase, go to the cart page to start the checkout process.
You will be prompted with a few other options such as an upgrade to a First Class pass, options for a mobile or mailed paper pass, and refund protection. If you have any discount codes, this would also be the page to apply it.

After selecting your options, you will be prompted to enter your traveller details, including name, date of birth and country of residence. It must also match your passport or ID that will be used to verify your Eurail Pass by ticket inspectors and other authorized personnel. You can also add your billing address in case it is different from your personal address.

Following the Traveller Details page, you will be led to the payment page where you can use any major credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal.
Physical Pass vs. Mobile Pass
Mobile Pass is the easiest method to use the Eurail Pass, where reservations and rail trip additions can be done just minutes before departure. You also do not have to log every journey by paper as opposed to the paper pass. If your device gets lost or stolen, you can get a free replacement pass on a new device in case you need another one,

The Paper Pass is a practical way to collect and materialize your rail journeys across Europe. However, it needs to be shipped to your address at your expense. Shipping can start at $19 USD, but you have to be very mindful about the time you need in order to receive the pass before your next trip.
How to Use the Eurail Pass
Activating Your Pass
Your Flexi Pass is activated as soon as you add and confirm a trip for each day you enable a train on your saved journeys. For Flexi Pass holders, once a journey is activated, it starts the use of your Global Pass travel day.

For Continuous pass holders, the first day starts whenever you use an activated rail journey in the Eurail planning app.
Do You Still Need to Make Seat Reservations?
Yes and no. There are both non-reserved and reserved seating on most intercity trains. However, international, high-speed, and night trains, including the Eurostar, have a policy for mandatory seat reservations. Moreover, the Eurostar only has a select number of seats available to passholders.
Reserved seats are not guaranteed with the Eurail Pass and are often an upcharge, even for 1st-class passholders. There is open seating in most trains where a reservation is not needed, however, on busier lines and times of day, the Euraiil booking site will recommend you purchase a reserved seat to avoid standing.
Additionally, if your journey involves multiple legs, you will have the option to purchase a reservation for each leg.

Seat reservations are generally non-refundable and non-transferable days leading up to the departure, though each rail company has a different policy so be sure to check out the exchange and refund conditions for reservations.
Trains That Require a Reservation (and Extra Fees)
The Eurostar is the most common train that has a mandatory seat reservation. Depending on the class of travel you choose to travel in, it can be 29 Euros on top of your rail pass. Seats for passholders are extremely limited on the Eurostar, so be sure to book early enough, otherwise you won’t be able to use your pass towards the journey.

Using the Pass on Night Trains and Ferries
Eurail passes can be used on night trains and ferries. However, the Eurail pass will not offer discounts for seat reservation on the night trains. There are discounts depending on the class of service provided. When I booked a night cabin on the OBB NightJet, I had to pay an additional $124.64 to secure a Mini Cabin, which was the same for both 1st and 2nd class Passholders.
Some regional Eurail One Country passes, like the Greek Islands Eurail pass, include Economy ferry seat reservations. However, if you hold a Eurail Global pass, you can get 30% off the seat reservation fee. You can also save a travel day for days where you use the Eurail Pass for the ferry discount.

Border-Crossing Rules
If your train is crossing the border between Schengen countries, typically there are few border checks. However, if you do encounter border guards in the middle of your journey, just be sure to have your Eurail pass and passport ready for inspection.
For travellers taking the train to the UK on the Eurostar, border checks will be conducted at the departure stations. There is a specific section of the terminal at non-UK terminals for passengers going to the UK for border checks.
First you go through the departure country’s border exit checks and then the UK border authority right after. After the border checks are completed, you can get on the train
If you’re departing the UK towards mainland Europe, you will go through exit checks by the UK Border force before encountering the French border authority at London St. Pancras station.
Hidden Fees and Costs to Watch Out For
Reservation Surcharges on High-Speed Trains
Some high-speed rail lines will require a seat reservation in order to board their trains. Particularly, the TGV or SNCF in France will require a reservation for most journeys. Another notable example of mandatory surcharges would be the Eurostar, which can be $40 USD or more.

Is the Eurail Pass Worth It?
When the Pass Saves You Money
The Eurail Pass is well worth it if you’re planning to visit multiple countries in Europe by rail on multiple days. Additionally, if you’re trying to reach destinations across different parts of a city, the Railpass covers some suburban trains, so your connections would be included in your pass. Although the suburban trains might not cost as much as an intercity train, the small fares can add up, increasing the value of the rail pass.
More importantly, the Eurail Pass provides a lot of flexibility and reduces the variability between different train fares. If you were looking to take an evening or later train but somehow found some extra time, you can change your train to an earlier departure.
Note that seat reservations are generally non-refundable and non-transferable unless booked up to 30 days before departure.
Point-to-Point Tickets Can Be Cheaper
If you’re not planning multiple regional train trips in your journey, point-to-point tickets will be cheaper to purchase. Seat reservations will typically be the same cost on the same route if it’s a direct connection.
For example, if you’re only taking trains on specific segments, or planning to fly between cities, it would be cheaper to purchase tickets directly from the rail carrier. Some long distance trains departing later in the day will also be cheaper as well.
Break-Even Calculator: How to Run the Numbers
To figure out if the Eurail Pass is worth purchasing versus booking directly, I would take note of every journey you’re planning to take. As an example, let’s say you’re going to Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Prague on the same itinerary.
Direct Booking:
Paris Gare du Nord to Amsterdam Centraal: $59 (52 EUR)

Amsterdam Centraal to Berlin: 89 EUR

Berlin to Prague: 49 EUR

The total is 192 EUR, without taking into account connecting trains or optional seat reservations.
If you’re going point to point, it is cheaper to book directly. However, if you’re looking to explore different parts of the country, like taking day trips to different parts of each country, then it will likely be worth doing the Eurail pass.
Tips to Maximize Your Eurail Pass Value
How to Avoid Reservation Fees
The Eurail Pass planning site will show you which trains are recommended to prepay for a reservation. If the train preview is recommending a reservation, it is predicting a busier train, so if you’re looking for a window seat, or a single seat, I would advise purchasing a reservation.
However, if the train is showing “Seat reservation optional”, it means that there’s a good chance that the train won’t be very busy, where you can save some money from paying fees.

Combining the Pass with Budget Flights
One really great way to enhance your Eurail Pass would be to combine your travel with budget flights. Low-cost carriers in Europe are much more competitive and cheaper versus budget carriers in North America. Though, you will need to plan which days you’d want to take your budget flights.
For example, if you’re in France and you’re looking to visit Birmingham, UK, it would be cheaper overall to purchase a 31 EUR roundtrip flight from Toulouse to Birmingham. It’ll also save you from spending money on expensive and very limited reservations on the Eurostar trains. You can also use the Eurail Pass in the UK so you’ll be able to get around the country once you arrive.

Since budget carriers have a strict baggage limit, you can also ask to leave your bags at a previous hotel or a baggage storage space for a small fee, and it will still be cheaper than taking the Eurostar, before and after seat reservation fees.
Final Verdict: Should You Buy a Eurail Pass?
If you’re looking to explore different regions by train, or if the destinations you’re visiting have suburban trains covered under the pass, it will be advisable to purchase the Eurail Pass. If you also want flexibility in the trains you book, especially to save on seat reservation fees, Eurail will be your best companion for travel across Europe.
However, if your journey is comprised mainly of point-to-point connections (e.g. Amsterdam to Berlin), it will likely be cheaper to book directly.
